My great grandmother had violet eyes, but after that, everyone else in my family has had brown. My brother and I have lighter brown eyes since our father's dad is White. Is it possible for my children to have violet eyes?

And just in case you didn't know, violet is a real eye color, but just not common.

And is it possible for mine to change? My eyes used to be really dark, but they have gotten lighter.

There is really less than a 1% chance of your children having violet eyes. It might be possible, but it's doubtful.

My one year old little girl is named Annika. We pronounce it as the Dutch and Swedes do: Ahn-nick-ah. The emphasis is on the "ahn". We get nothing but COMPLIMENTS on her name. It is unique, but not too weird. You will love it. However, I must say that I think Violet goes better as a middle name rather than Nicole...those names are amazingly similar sounding...sort of repetitive. But Annika is a wonderful and beautiful name....it means 'grace.'

I like Annika Violet. I feel that Annika Nicole has too many K sounds in it. Don't listen to what anyone else says, if you like the name, then go for it. At least Annika is an actual name and spelled correctly and not the made up crap everyone else is using like Jayden or Marrleigh....those type of name make me want to vomit. I much prefer Annika Violet. Annika Nicole does have a snappy rhythm, but Nicole sounds tired and becoming a filler middle name. If Nicole has meaning for you, I would choose it. However, if there is no significance to Violet or Nicole, I prefer the soft, fluid feel of Annika Violet.

well jazzing works pretty well. but i suggest this if you want some brighter more vibrant pieces of purple with a violet back drop. have matrix socolor 5vr put as a base color. get highlites put in with a conditioning decolorizer try to get as light as possible with out being white. even yellow is fine it will still work. then apply matrix prizims to the whole head- in the violet plum-careful this stains! follow the directions and remember not to shampoo to remove it the first time! i promise this is frreaking awesome color and you will love it! also though, its a temporary dye (prizms) so you will see it come out when you wash your hair. it lasts 8-12 shampoos. so becareful of clothes when you first come out of shower unless your hair is dry! hope this helps but it will be rockin~ im sure! ;)

Basic Care for African Violets

Water

In general, African violets need just enough water to keep the soil moist, but never soggy. Too much water will leave your African violets susceptible to root rot and crown rot. Overwatering can also cause de-nitrification, a condition, which prevents plants from getting the nitrogen they need. One method is to put water in the saucer under the pot so the soil can absorb amount of water they need when the soil feels dry and the pot too light (about one a week or two). Discard any water left after 30 min. The water should be room temperature. Water too cold can cause leaves to curl down as the water is absorbed into the plant. It is always important not to get water on the leaves. The only exception to this is when you are spray misting for purposes of quick feeding or increasing the humidity around your plants. Never use soft water and avoid using highly chlorinated water.

Grooming

Look for potting soil or other debris, which may have accumulated on the leaves. Dust, dirt and other debris may be removed using a soft-bristled brush, such as a small artist paintbrush or make-up brush. Note, however, that any brush of this kind should be reserved exclusively for use on your plants. Next, inspect your African violets for spent blossoms. Also, keep your eyes alert for leaves that are damaged. Spent leaves and flowers encourage rot that, under the right conditions, can spread to healthy parts of your African violets. Damaged leaves and flowers leave your African violet vulnerable to bacterial diseases, viruses and other microorganisms, such as Nematodes. Finally, your grooming routine should always include an inspection for insects and other pests. Often, the pests themselves will be clearly visible. Even if you do not see them, however, most pests will leave symptoms. The appearance of any unusual characteristic on your African violets should be cause for further investigation. Remember that insects and other pests are easier to treat when their presence is discovered early.

Light Requirements

The amount of light that an African violet receives is important for its health and overall performance. African violets need light for photosynthesis. While photosynthesis is most often associated with a plant’s green leaves and stems, its most vital function is to convert carbon, hydrogen and oxygen (in the form of carbon dioxide and water) into usable energy called plant carbohydrates.

If an African violet does not get enough light, it will stop flowering and its leaves will begin to turn yellow. It is also likely that the African violet which is not getting enough light, will become rangy as it develops elongated leaves and stems. African violet should be placed near the window facing east. If sun light is too hot, use thin curtain on the window.

It is important to remember that African violets need at least eight hours of darkness, each day, in order to bloom. While African violets need a sufficient duration of light to produce florigen (flowering hormone), florigen itself does not trigger blooming until it is dark. For this reason, African violets should receive light for no more than 16 hours a day. To properly regulate the duration of light, you may want to consider getting a timer for your grow lights.

Temperature and Air Quality

In terms of temperature, humidity and other factors of air quality, African violets thrive in an environment that most people would consider pleasant. Therefore, if you feel comfortable, chances are, your African violets are feeling comfortable as well.

In general, you should keep the air temperature around your African violets as close as possible to 70 degrees F. Also, while extreme variations in temperature should always be avoided, do not be concerned about slight fluctuations between day and nighttime temperatures. Good air circulation, especially when the air is damp, helps prevent the growth of such fungi as Botrytis and Powdery Mildew.

Propagation

Choose a leaf that is fresh and fairly young but full size. Cut the stem at an angle, leaving a stem below the leaves that is 1 - 2 inches long. Fill a small pot (that has drainage holes) with a very light potting mix. (It can be bought at the Home Depot) Set the leaf into the prepared pot at an angle. Do not set it into the soil very deeply. Water and allow the excess moisture to drain away. Place the potted leaf into a clear plastic bag (zip-loc bags work well) and seal it tightly closed. You may wish to blow into the bag as it is sealed to puff it up with air. Set the leaf in a bright location out of direct sunlight. It normally takes about one month for the leaf to root and another month for the plantlets to appear.

How do I keep my African Violet alive?
Your African violet will thrive if you find a spot for it where it gets lots of REFLECTED light -- not direct sunlight, but reflected light. Get some African Violet plant food and feed it by putting the drops, in water, in a dish and sitting the potted plant in it so it will soak upthe nutrient through the roots. African violets don't do well if the leaves get wet, so this is the best way to water and feed them.

If you do this,you'll have sturdy and prolific flowering plants.

Reply:With my African violets, I start with the a soil specially made for African violets. You need a pot with good drainage, and you need to keep the soil moist ( not soaking wet). I also use a fertilizer specifically made for them too. Always be very careful not to get any water or dirt on the leaves. When this happens to me, I quickly get a paper towel and start dabbing the water off. There are even special brushes made for cleaning dirt from the leaves, but all I do is use the spray can air used for my keyboard to get the dirt and dust off. Also, African violets do need sun to promote blooms, but never in a window with direct sunlight lasting more than 4 hours. Good luck with your violets! Hope this helps.

Water about once a week, by putting water in a bowl, setting the pot inside the bowl, until it takes up all the water. Check your plant at least once a week, to make sure it doesn't go completely dry. Also, to get it to bloom, use a 15-30-15 soluble plant food and feed it about once a month. Don't get the leaves wet.

They are the primary colors.

What is the best way to propagate an African Violet? Why?
I do this a lot. Here's how. Choose a healthy looking leaf with at least a one inch stem. Pinch the leaf off half way down the stem. Use the eraser end of a pencil to poke a hole into the soil equal to the length of the stem. Put stem into hole and press soil around stem AND base of leaf. Root stimulating products are not necessary. Water plant as needed by using a spoon to carefully drip water around base of leaf. The leaf does not like to get wet. Put the plant in a sunny window. Do not cover it. Water once daily ( or less if soggy ) and be patient. This will take much time, but it works great. You will see baby leaves begin to grow from the base of the old leaf. I do not use fancy soil or fuss about cutting style and my plants have always grown fine.
Reply:I prefer to take a mature leaf, neither a very new one or a very old one. Cut the leaf stem down to about an inch and half in length if it's longer; don't cut directly across, but at an angle to the stem, so that plenty of tissue is exposed. Pot the leaf in a container of FRESH African violet potting soil; be sure the pot is labeled as to the variety of the leaf. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. It takes time, but in a few weeks you should start to see "babies" coming up through the soil. When the leaves are about the size of a dime, the young plants are big enough to be separated and planted individually.

Some folks use water because the roots seem to show up more quickly; however, I've found that water-rooted babies are a lot more fragile, since the water has been supporting the leaves during development, and I used to lose a lot of them that way. Soil rooting takes a little longer, but I get MUCH better plants that way, with strong leaf stems and a good root system. Likewise, I know that some people use rooting hormone when they propagate leaves; again, though, I've found that you get lots of roots this way, but not many leaves, and ultimately you may not get ENOUGH leaves to have a viable plant.

If you can provide some mild heat underneath the leaves (presuming you don't allow the soil to dry out), I've found that the plants root and grow considerably faster than in room-temperature air. I use some pet bed warmer pads for this purpose; you can get them on eBay for about $20, but they're certainly not a necessity. I use covered flats to start violet leaves, but you can also do something as simple as covering a pot with a clear plastic bag to retain moisture.

1. You only need 8 watt for a 100 gallon pond.

2. Reduce the flow into the UV Sterilizer with a diverter - the water needs a minimum exposure time to the sterilizer to kill the algae and whatnot.

3. Be patient - it won't happen overnight. It takes about 3 weeks.

4. Make sure you keep the biofilter running. The UVC will kill the algae, but the filter removes it. UVCs are only sterilizers not filters...

You'll be pleased. Check Lowes or Home Depot - they have economical ones - under $100.

You are right! The wavelength of blue light allows it to go further than red light. This is also a reason that many deep sea creatures are red as opposed to black, because no red light can reach these depths they can't be seen by any other deep sea creatures.
Reply:When you view the ocean from above you are seeing what is left of light after it is absorbed and reflected. If you think of the ocean sand as "yellow", then when the ocean is shallow you are seeing a combination of blue and yellow, which is green.

When it is deep there is only blue with no reflection from the bottom so it is blue.

just like compounds only give off certain wavelengths, they only absorb the same ones. i have no basis for this but it could be that water absorbs more red than violet. and since water is a compound, it should have wider bands which could cover greater spans of wavelengths.

UV lamps do have a "violet" color, however, it's not truly violet, but ultraviolet (UV is in the visible spectrum). Plants do enjoy UV lamps indoors because they need a certain amount of UV to further photosynthesis. Don't forget that sun is best for them thought.
Reply:A true ultraviolet lamp emits ultraviolet light- a shorter wavelength than even violet. As plants use red and blue light to grow, giving them only ultraviolet light will only cause them to starve. Or mutate... ultraviolet light is used in labs to produce mutations in experimental organisms.

I doubt you have a true UV lamp tho... So probably no mutations for you.

I had to put my hair up again.But if it is a shmapoo as well as the toner downer then use a conditioner when u fininsh. I think u need to leave it on for a while though.

I purchased this dragon fish on March 1st ,2007.Its in a 55 gallon tank with 2 bala sharks ,1 irid shark,1 plec.My tanks temperature is abt 70 -78 .Other fishes eats all there food, there are still alittle food left in the tank but i guess the dragon fish has a hard time finding its way ,and after couple min those foods are alll gone ,because of my other fishes in the tank.Help pleazz.

What are you trying to feed him? Dragon gobies are filter feeders and will often take frozen bloodworms or blackworms. I've also had them eat shrimp pellets after they've softened up, but chances are your other fish won't let them get to this point. Often, you won't see them eating because they will sift food out of the gravel. They are a bit on the shy side, so they won't try to get the food from the other fish. You may have to try target feeding him with a baster or use a tank divider to feed him separately if this is a problem.

Some of my SAINTPAULIAS simply grow new circles of leaves, like cabbages do if you leave them grow in the kitchen garden for too long, but they haven't got any flowers.

Someone told me that mine are MALE plants and obviously will never give flowers. In this case I agree, but how can that be possible?

I cut some leaves from well-grown older plants to make new ones (the normal way everybody suggests) and this is the disappointing result!!!

And of course I'VE NEVER READ anywhere that such a thing might happen with saintpaulia's leaves.

Everywhere they say: simply plant your leaves and keep soil moist and new beautiful plants will grow and GIVE FLOWERS, which IS TOTALLY FALSE in my case!!!!

Have you any idea about that? Can "MALE PLANTS ONLY" stem from some of the leaves one uses to create new plants??

My grandmother was a big african violet fan and obtained most of hers by cuttings (she had 3-4 dozen throughout her house at the height of her collection). Most, if not all, of which bloomed. They do have to mature - i think it may have been 2-3 years before they would actually bloom.

African violets can be picky, my mother was good at rooting and growing, but where my grandmother would have a dozen or so in bloom at once and 2 or three times a year, my mother would only get maybe 1 or 2 blooms once in great while.

I don't really know that much more about the african violet, but generally speaking, propagation from rooting stems creates clones, so as long as your taking a cutting from a plant that has bloomed, the rooting should bloom at once the conditions are right.

Actually green is the easiest to see being in the middle of the visual spectrum at 550nm at it's purist.

If this isn't what you're looking for it's most likely to depend on the person. Because red %26amp; violet are both at the ends of the visible spectrum they should be about the same.

I'd guess red because the range of it's wavelength is slightly broader at 630-700nm (70) while violet is 400-450nm (50), that and there are more ambiguous shades of violet than red.

Of course on the other hand with violets smaller wavelength it may be easier to penetrate the human eye. The same logic applies to the wavelength of sound. Hence why smaller animals can hear higher pitches.

Reply:Idk, but u can get a bump off a poppy plant!
Reply:Sure, real easy. Nip off a real healthy looking leaf and put it in a water glass filled about 1 to 1 1/2 inches (you don't want the water to touch the leaf) and set it where you keep the plant. I don't know how long it will take to root--just keep an eye on it. Or, you can buy a rooting hormone to put on the cutting and put it in some vermiculite or potting soil to root. Make sure you use a good quality potting soil, not top soil.

I know they have food especially for them but I never think to use it..I just keep them in a bowl of water and they get the amt they need from the bottom ..They Do not like to be touched at all or watered on the leaves.GOOD LUCK!

well on the Scott Mills show on radio1 they were all confused by this as well. so they went and did loads of research and stuff and found out about some woman called Violet Hill in America who had met Chris Martin or something like that. so they rang her up and asked her questions like "have you heard of coldplay" and "do you know chris martin" and i dont know how popular coldplay are in america but everyone on the radio (and me) did seem to think that the way the woman answered seemed to make it quite obvious she had definetely heard of coldplay, and she had definetely met chris martin before.so the answer to ur question is

In general plants use red and blue light for photosynthesis. Of the two Red is used the most.
Reply:Blue light is absorbed less efficiently than red due to higher energy.

Also, blue and red photons do different things within the cell. ie. they set off different sets of chemical reactions like controlling the circadium rhythm (red light at dawn, blue light at dusk etc.).

Chlorophyll a prefers red light over blue (although blue is preferred almost as much). Most plants have a higher ratio of chlorophyll a to b.

Plant wants to use all of the light to maximize energy absorption. They also have other pigments to absorb at other wavelengths.

If I were you I'd go to an upscale fabric store (NOT joanne fabrics!) and start having a look at the Lavender %26amp; Violet fabrics - Why? Because the textile studios have done all the hard work, they've picked out colors that look beautiful together, and they may even do combinations that you'd never expect or think up on your own.

If you see something with color combinations that you really fall in love with, you can buy a small amount of the fabric and let that be your guiding inspiration for your color theme:) (If you are REALLY in love with the colors you can always cut up the fabric to give pieces to "helpful relatives" who want to "assist" you with your decorations to make sure they stick to the colors on the swatch...)

Irises are upright flowers with long, sword-shaped leaves. They are monocots with parallel veins in the leaves. The flowers have three petals hanging down and three petals upward in a kind of crown.

Do an image search for these flowers. They're quite common and there should be hundreds of pictures of them on the internet.

Go to www.ask.com and put in first violet and then put in iris. Select the search option of pictures. You will see at a glance they are entirely different.

Reply:Totally different. An iris grown from a korm , has a tall stem with 1-4 blossoms on the top of that. Violet is a low plant, lots of leaves grown sort of in clumps, is purple or white.

I am not aware that birds are frightened of either ultraviolet light or suntan lotion.

You can, however, get decals of hawks to place on the glass.

You can also get owl statuettes to sit outside the window or on the window sill. Owls will normally scare other birds away.

Find the statuettes at farm stores where they sell them to either scare away birds or to attract Turkeys during Turkey hunting season ( the Turkeys will gobble if they see an owl).

African violets like to stay sightly moist, but not wet. However, a bit of water in the base can be used to keep it humid, which they also like. Avoid watering from the top, as they do not like their leaves wet.
Reply:Do not keep water in the saucer. It leads to soggy soil which can lead to a multitude of problems, the most likely being some form of root rot or fungus gnats or shore flies. You can water from the bottom or top but in 15 minutes if there is any water in the saucer dump it.

If you touch the surface and soil particles stick to your finger because of the moisture it does not need watered. Water only when necessary. Overwatering is the #1 cause of death in houseplants.
Reply:My African Violets have done best by not watering from the base but by misting. Standing water in the base could lead to root rot.
Reply:I know these are supposed to be good but, I never had any luck with them. When I had african violets I went back to clay pots and watered them like I do all my plants.
Reply:I was a treasuer in an African Violet Society many years ago, to assure proper watering use the wick system. remove plant from container add a wick to the container through the bottom long enough to reach another container underneath put dirt and plant back into pot fill the undercontainer with water put the wick in the water and that it, check weekly if the water is down refill it, self watering. Don't let water get on the leaves, it'll cause dead spots. Water that is room temperature is not so bad, but I don't do it at all. Don't allow sucker plants to grow on the main stem of the plant. Don't try to grow them outside. Don't place them in direct sunlight. Don't keep them in dark areas. Don't use any other pot other than a cheap 4-inch plastic pot. Don't use peat moss. Don't keep your plants' soil wet. Don't let the plant stay dried out. Don't leave dead flowers or leaves on your plant. Don't subject them to sudden temperature changes. Don't run over them with the car. Do not, do not, do not...

If your question is what would the world look like if we could see them then that's impossible to answer because it's impossible to determine if one person even perceives the visible spectrum in the same way as another. It's completely subjective.

It might, but it depends on how much of each you use. If you use more pink, it will tend to be a pinker/redder shade: a violet or purple; if you use more blue, it will be bluer. Blue-violet is technically blue + violet, and since violet is technically blue + red, it's as if you have 2 parts blue for each part red. But since you're talking about using a shade of pink, and not red, there would also be a tiny bit of white in it, so I don't know how dark you would be able to make it. You might get a darkish plum color, for example.

As I said with your other question, the best thing is to try it, experimenting, adjusting, and varying it as you like.

a well drained soled.they dont like their leaves wetand they will flower when their roots are crowded.so dont get a pot that is to big and water from the bottom.i put a saucer under pot and fill that wit water.the roots will soak it up from there.good luck

Reply:i suggest miracle grow low acid potting soil. violets can be killed quickly by too much water so buy a pot(s) with a plate so that you can pour water into plater and the soil will soak the water to the roots. remember dont water the plant by pouring directly onto plant this will cause leaf discoloration and rot.you can propogate africans with leaf cuttings.cut off a leaf from a large plant and place stem into damp soil.check every few days for soil moisture.use miraclegrow moisture holdind potting soil for this
Reply:Most garden centers, like Home Depot and Lowe's, sell a bagged soil that is specially designed for African Violets. The bag actually says that it is African Violet potting soil.

Good luck on growing these beauties, and remember that their leaves absolutely hate to get water on them. I water mine by putting the pots in a basin of water so the water goes into the bottom of the African Violet pot. When the soil gets moist at the top, I take them out and allow them to drain excess water.

Yes, ultraviolet light causes tanning. Exposure to UV light causes the body to produce excess melanin, the molecule that makes skin darker. The reason the body does this is to protect you from excess UV light. UV light can cause skin cancer and mole formation, as well as general skin aging. It also causes sunburns.

Artificial tanning products can give you a tanned appearance without exposure to UV light. See the second link in my sources for more information about these products. I've heard that these can produce artificial-looking tans, so your best bet for a good tan is probably to slowly expose yourself to more and more sunlight to get your tan, or to use sunblock (and slowly decrease the SPF).

After I fought and won my battle with Hodgkin's Disease, I bought violet wristbands from The Hodgkin's Lymphoma Violet Awareness Shop at http://www.thehodgeshop.com

They have the "It's All About Hope" violet wristband with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Awareness engraved on one side of the wristband. They're pretty neat and the proceeds are donated towards research for Hodgkin's Disease clinical trials.

P.S. Their story is pretty heartwarming. The family started the Hodgkin's Awareness campaign after their sister successfully completed a stem cell transplant in which an identical twin sister was the donor.

Check out Consumer Reports Magasine for their ratings on water purifiers. The machine should have a silver (metal), filter to kill bacteria and retard build up of the slimy biofilms. (or some other equally effective anti-microbial method). The device should be cleaned out, as per manufacturers instrucions, or the machine will eventually be worse than no filtration at all.

It is Streptocarpus, sometimes also called Cape Primrose. They are relatives of the gloxinia and the African violet. They do come in some other colors besides purple, including white, blue, pink, rose, and red, often with blotches of a contrasting color.
Reply:Yes, it is probably Streptocarpus - we would have to get a sample or at least a photo of it as there are roughly 130 genera and 2900 species throughout the world. In my neck of the woods we have 51 species. My local favorite is S. polyanthus. Grow off moist rock faces and rocky outcrops. Magnificent small blue flowers.

Has anyone ever used this? I just bought Loreal today, I was searching for Aveda or Redken but the local beauty supply didnt sell the shampoo and conditioner in those brands. Is this good enough or should I order the other brands online for better results? I could not find any reviews on these Loreal products online. Thanks in advance.

My highlights are yellow :( so this is the reason for me using this type of shampoo/condtioner. I hope it works.

Personally, these products work just as good as the more expensive salon brands. It makes no difference to me, or my hair..though I will say that the scent is absolutely to die for. Give it a try. If it doesn't turn out to be all that you'd hoped for..chalk it up to trial and error and remind yourself not to select that particular product the next time you go shopping for your shampoo and conditioner.

Yes, I grow many of African violets in violet pots. The trick is to have the pot no larger than 4 inches for a large violet, or half as wide as the leaf span is.

Another thing is to prime the pot before you plant in it. Fill the outer pot with water, put in the inner pot, and either put a little water in the bottom or leave it empty. Let it sit for a day, so that the water can work its way all through the pot, this makes it easier for the plant to get the water it needs. Also try never to let the pot go dry, since it slows things down for absportion.

If you're in the UK there's 2 things you can do. Buy crystalized violets from Sainsburys and make your own flavouring by infusing in hot water and use that water to make a syrup. Choosing a name for a child is one of the most important things you will do for your child. All of the above names in the right setting would be appropriate for a child. Ask your family members for their advice about the names. Some names just DONT go with their last names. Think about the fact that this name(s) will be the one you will use with that child for a lifetime. Does it have a ring to it???? Do you and daddy like the way it sounds??? Will others think that the name is not right for your family ethnicity??? Do not be surprised if your child does not change her name, pick a nickname sometime later in life. If a child is teased a lot about their name, they will come to resent it. I knew a mom who named her child Teacup, Dukes of Hazzard. What a name!!!! Picking odd names places your child at a disadvantage right from the start. You can find a book of baby names in any book store. Don't forget that perhaps you can use a second name from someone in the family you want to honor, perhaps an aunt, your mom, his mom, your grandmothers.

All these factors play into naming a child. And, yes, look up the meaning of their name, also. Not sure I have ever heard of a girl named Persia, makes me think of a Persian cat. Your child may get comments about that.

Violet and Madison are both acceptable names with no negatives I know of. Madison may end up being called Dolly Madison, wife of President Madison, famous for the Dolly Madison ice cream. Hard to make much out of Violet.

Once again, they are all nice names. I have tried to draw upon my experience at deliveries when parents were thrilled to have their little newborn there, only to find out they named her Monilia, Syphilis, or some other bizarre name.

Give your daughter one up in life. Give her a name she will feel comfortable with and enjoy writing as she grows up.

Some names are a mouthful to say, others just glide off the tongue. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT name your child Rapunzel or Rumpelstiltskin, or Mickey Mouse. Am I making myself clear?

Names often make children feel empowered. Find a name you all like, that has a ring to it, that is easy to say and spell and that goes with the child's last name. Pick the easy spelling also. Makes the child not have to correct everyone who spells it the normal way. For example: Elizabeth versus Elsbyth.

I understand that you are not to water African violet (mine's purple) and let any water touches the leaves... which I haven't done! but I sprayed some adjacent plants with water spray and it seemed to have affected the Violet.. as the flwoers are getting mouldy...? Is that why? or some other problem with the plant? any help please?

this is an easy problem to solve for you.from now on you must only water your african violets from the base, stand them on a plant saucer and put the water into the saucer only. the other thing is the water must always be warm but not hot.you are quite correct in thinking no water should touch the leaves and flowers.you can feed the plants in the same way through the saucer not the top.

I have some plants of Saintpaulia. After the blooming , that lasts for several weeks, thank God, do any of you suggests cutting some of the basal leaves(the first circle, near the earth, which are usually the biggest ones) with the dead flowers or is it better to leave the plant alone and wait for the next blooming, which I imagine will start in a few months!!! Not before, unfortunately!. After the flowering period is it better to reduce water and fertilizer or not?

Any tricks for enducing the next blooming in the shortest possible time, without waiting too long?

On propagation, the material I read does not indicate before, during or after bloom, it simply says to use a "mature" leaf.

"The most common method of propagation is by leaf cutting in spring. Any healthy, firm leaf will do. Remove the entire leaf with petiole (leaf stem) by snapping or cutting it off at the stem of the plant and trim the petiole to about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length. Then make a hole in the growing medium (such as a half sand, half vermiculite mix) with a pencil, insert the leaf stem into the hole, and water thoroughly. According to Jones and Conover, roots normally appear at the petiole base in 3 to 4 weeks under good conditions and leaves of the new plants appear at the medium surface 3 to 4 weeks after root formation. In two to six months, young plants start from the bases of the stalks, which you'll be able to repot once they've formed two to three leaves.

Anyone have experience with bleaching deep stains from wood with UV lighting? Seems to me that this would work. I have laminated wood floors that were exposed to moisture from below due to a one time situation. The spot is darker than the rest of the floor but there is no damage to the wood itself or the finish.

I would like to try to use a UV light to fade the stain but I'm not sure what spectrum I should be using.

it's just always acted so strangely. it has a habit of developing bloom buds which turn yellow and die well before opening. now an entire platform branch has wilted and is dying, while the rest of the bush, and all my other roses, thrive. it is outdoors, gets plenty of water and nutrients. is this typical of this variety, or is this specimen defective?

Reply:Hi Ella, Your rose is a hybrid perpetual and does not behave this way normally. I suspect that you have an insect problem. Specifically a rose borer problem. Without seeing the rose it is difficult to say for sure, but the symptoms you've presented sound just like a rose borer. Anyhow, prune the branch and see if there is a hole down the center of the cane. If there is then continue to prune down the cane until you've pruned past the pest. If it is a borer make sure you put a flat headed tack in the top of the newly pruned cane to keep other borers from entering again. I hope this is of some help. Good luck.

I read this book in the sixth grade.....in the mid 80's. This was one of my favorite books and I would like to find it now. I just can't remember the name.

I think it is "Wild Violets" by Phyllis Green (1977): A poor and friendless nine-year-old witnesses the changes in her life and herself during the early days of World War II.

A poor girl maybe 8 or 9 years old (Ruthie?) is the scapegoat in her class. She has no friends and is constantly picked on. A rich girl named Cornelia joins her class, and the rest of the little girls suck up to her, trying to be her friend. Cornelia is a nice girl and befriends them all, but to everyone's surprise becomes best friends with the poor girl. There was *something* about a ring that Cornelia lost, and the poor girl desperately tried to find it for her - I think that's how they became friends. Then Cornelia's father makes some bad business deals (or something like that) and loses all the family's money. Once Cornelia is no longer rich, the other girls in the class start tormenting her as well as the other girl. There is one scene when Cornelia and her best friend walk out of the school building and the other girls are waiting and throw garbage at them.

The girl who was always poor wrote a poem about her friend when she becomes a victim of the other girls' nastiness. There was a line about Cornelia's star falling from the sky, and it "hurts her more than it ever hurt me, because I never made it to the sky". I believe the poor girl's family came into some money by the end of the book also.

Ultraviolet Rays can penetrate clouds and glass window.

UV Rays are a kind of Electromagnetic wave, different from light ray(Electromagnetic waves cannot be detected by the naked eye as compared to light). UV rays have very high frequencies which enables it to penetrate clouds)

Electromagnetic waves can also be refracted or reflected. Therefore, it influences the amount.

Glass cuts some frequencies of UV but by no means all - it depends on the type of glass. This is why fabrics fade near a window.

The reason for this cancellation is not just ebay policy. It is also US Federal law on importation of good from other countries. Listing them on the American site will still not work. Ebay will notice that you are from another country and the laws will still apply. You also run the risk of losing the item when it does not pass through customs. Black finned shark and violet goby compatible?

I was sold a black finned shark and a violet goby(as a Dragonfish) both as FW tropicals, neither stated longer than 8 - 10 inches. I have since discoved both are BW - marine water and will get quite a bit bigger. My question is are these 2 fish compatible. I still have the BF in a fresh environment as (he's?) still tiny - 1 1/2 in and the goby was changed over within 2 weeks. (he?) is already approx. 9 in. Fed mostly freeze dried shrimp and bloodworms - seems to thrive on them. I am hoping to acclimate the BF to BW and house them together?

I think they should be okay together. The dragon will not bother the shark at all, and the shark is fairly small at this point, so probably won't bother the dragon. As the shark grows, however, he may become a problem. Make sure you provide plenty of hiding places for the goby - fake plants, etc. He'll also burrow into a soft substrate like sand if need be.

You're correct in that both will prefer brackish water and can live in full marine.

African violet cuttings?

I was given a violet cutting--a leaf and stem. It has been potted for several months. The leaf looks vibrant but I am not getting any new growth. How long does it take before new growth occurs?

I agree with the answers so far. Some cuttings take longer than others. After several months I bet if you take a toothpick and gently pike around the stem you might find tiny leaves trying to reach the light through the dirt. My best luck has been to put fresh cuttings with a 1"- 2" stem in a small baggie. I add a few drops of the AF fertilized water I use routinely.. I seal the bag and check that there is not more than a couple of drops of water in the bag. It forms a mini green house. Several leaves can go in the same bag. It takes several weeks, in morning light--- that's the only place my violet seem to grow --- before you see the little roots forming. Let them get really long and tangled before planting. It may take several months. I tip the bag now and then to be sure the roots are moist, not sopping. Sometimes a leaf will rot out but 75% of the leaves grow good root structures and survive being transplanted to a loose soil mix, placed in an east or south window.

Reply:I never did it that way - I always cut the end of the stem nice a clean with a sharp knife and stuck the stem into a bottle or jar. You can put a piece of foil over the mouth of the jar, and make a hole just big enough for the stem. You have to watch that the water level is up over the bottom of the stem always.

By and by some roots grow down and then by and by these tiny little leaves form around the place where the stem was cut. When they get a bit bigger, you can take the whole mess out of the jar with the original leaf and stick the roots into soil, leaving all the tiny leaves exposed, and pretty soon you have a violet.
Reply:If the leaf is still looking vibrant, you know something's happening downstairs with it's roots - hang in there. I've been growing them all my life, sometimes they take a while. Never water from the top. It will happen, just don't overwater either. Perhaps try and feed it some foliar feed or liquid feeder containing some potassium to encourage the root growth. Good luck.

It's just a named hybrid of African Violet. No, it's not poisonous, but why would you want to eat it?

'Pretty Poison' could just be what's called a cultivar name, that's used by plant breeders as a name for that specific variety of african violet.
