What happens to the different colors of light when white light shines on a violet object.?

The violet part of the spectrum is reflected while the rest of the wavelengths that make up white light are absorbed.

What happens to the different colors of light when white light shines on a violet object.?
don't no ,that's over my head.
Reply:it is absorbed into the object.

the light you see is the light reflected, in this case violet.

If my great grandmother had violet eyes, how likely is it for my children to have violet eyes?

My great grandmother had violet eyes, but after that, everyone else in my family has had brown. My brother and I have lighter brown eyes since our father's dad is White. Is it possible for my children to have violet eyes?

And just in case you didn't know, violet is a real eye color, but just not common.

And is it possible for mine to change? My eyes used to be really dark, but they have gotten lighter.

If my great grandmother had violet eyes, how likely is it for my children to have violet eyes?
There is really less than a 1% chance of your children having violet eyes. It might be possible, but it's doubtful.

What do you think of the name Annika? Possibly with the middle name Violet or Nicole?

My one year old little girl is named Annika. We pronounce it as the Dutch and Swedes do: Ahn-nick-ah. The emphasis is on the "ahn". We get nothing but COMPLIMENTS on her name. It is unique, but not too weird. You will love it. However, I must say that I think Violet goes better as a middle name rather than Nicole...those names are amazingly similar sounding...sort of repetitive. But Annika is a wonderful and beautiful name....it means 'grace.'

What do you think of the name Annika? Possibly with the middle name Violet or Nicole?
I like Annika Violet. I feel that Annika Nicole has too many K sounds in it. Don't listen to what anyone else says, if you like the name, then go for it. At least Annika is an actual name and spelled correctly and not the made up crap everyone else is using like Jayden or Marrleigh....those type of name make me want to vomit. Annika sounds like a classy and unique name..I love it!
Reply:definetly Annika Nicole

its okay name

people might just have trouble pronouncing it
Reply:I love it, it sounds Russian. It doesn't work with Violet, but Nicole is fun to say. I also like Anya
Reply:interesting, unique-it really sounds good w/the name Nicole

GOOD-LUCK and CONGRATULATIONS
Reply:Annika Violet goes well if it has a last name included, like Annika Violet Connors for example, but just as two names together, I think Annika Nicole is a beautiful name :]
Reply:I like Annika. It means beautiful and not many people have this name. Do Annika Violet. The name Nicole is too commonly used as a middle name.
Reply:I really love that name and yes, I'd pronouce it Ah-ni-ka. I think it goes best with Nicole rather than with Violet, but I like both
Reply:Annika is really nice. Nicole doesn't flow with it -- plus it is so overused!
Reply:I like it better with violet
Reply:LOVE IT, ANNIKA NICOLE SOUNDS BEST, SPELL NICOLE LIKE THIS . . . NIKOLE TO FOLLOW ANNIKA
Reply:i would pronounce it the same way you do. I like Annika Nicole better than violet. its a pretty name
Reply:i love the name Violet but I dont like Nicole
Reply:I like Annika with Nicole, but not with Violet. As far as names go, though, I like Violet a lot.
Reply:Never use a name that most people will not pronounce the way you believe it should be.

Annika is the kind of name Britney Spears would select, if that validates your taste. Paris Hilton would go with Violet, I can assure you.
Reply:It's a good name, popular in Sweden as a diminutive of Anna (notables include golfer Annika Sorenstam and artist Annika Larsson). One of my Danish ancestors was named Anniche, which is the Danish spelling. When put together with Nicole, though, it makes me think of Anna Nicole Smith; many other people may make the same connection.
Reply:I like Annika violet,

Annika Nicole kinda sounds weird because people Might call her Anna Nicole,

like Anna Nicole Smith,

YIKES!
Reply:I love the name! It's very pretty, and fresher sounding than Annabelle or just Anna.I say it as ANN-ih-kah, with the 'ih' sounding like the "i' in Nicole.

I much prefer Annika Violet. Annika Nicole does have a snappy rhythm, but Nicole sounds tired and becoming a filler middle name. If Nicole has meaning for you, I would choose it. However, if there is no significance to Violet or Nicole, I prefer the soft, fluid feel of Annika Violet.
Reply:I say this with all do respect, but I do not think I would have been able to pronounce that in the way you wish. My initial guess was Ann-ick-ah, clearly not what you were going for. I am not a huge fan of the name myself, I do not know why but it makes me think of Star Wars, even though I've never watched a full movie. Perhaps using one of your middle name ideas for the first name might be a better choice? Best of luck
Reply:I like that name it's different and I would choose nicole as the middle name
Reply:Annika Nicole sounds better.
Reply:An-ni-ka. Annika Brionne
Reply:Annika Nicole is really cute. Would she go by Anne or Annie for short?
Reply:I love that name! Annika is very pretty.

I like Annika Nicole best.

I would pronounce it Anne- Nih- Kah. It's lovely.

What is the best hair dye for african american hair that carries a violet or purple?

well jazzing works pretty well. but i suggest this if you want some brighter more vibrant pieces of purple with a violet back drop. have matrix socolor 5vr put as a base color. get highlites put in with a conditioning decolorizer try to get as light as possible with out being white. even yellow is fine it will still work. then apply matrix prizims to the whole head- in the violet plum-careful this stains! follow the directions and remember not to shampoo to remove it the first time! i promise this is frreaking awesome color and you will love it! also though, its a temporary dye (prizms) so you will see it come out when you wash your hair. it lasts 8-12 shampoos. so becareful of clothes when you first come out of shower unless your hair is dry! hope this helps but it will be rockin~ im sure! ;)

How do I keep my African Violet alive?

Following is the information i got from AVSA home page plus what i think is important. It works fine for me. hope it helps you.

Basic Care for African Violets

Water

In general, African violets need just enough water to keep the soil moist, but never soggy. Too much water will leave your African violets susceptible to root rot and crown rot. Overwatering can also cause de-nitrification, a condition, which prevents plants from getting the nitrogen they need. One method is to put water in the saucer under the pot so the soil can absorb amount of water they need when the soil feels dry and the pot too light (about one a week or two). Discard any water left after 30 min. The water should be room temperature. Water too cold can cause leaves to curl down as the water is absorbed into the plant. It is always important not to get water on the leaves. The only exception to this is when you are spray misting for purposes of quick feeding or increasing the humidity around your plants. Never use soft water and avoid using highly chlorinated water.

Grooming

Look for potting soil or other debris, which may have accumulated on the leaves. Dust, dirt and other debris may be removed using a soft-bristled brush, such as a small artist paintbrush or make-up brush. Note, however, that any brush of this kind should be reserved exclusively for use on your plants. Next, inspect your African violets for spent blossoms. Also, keep your eyes alert for leaves that are damaged. Spent leaves and flowers encourage rot that, under the right conditions, can spread to healthy parts of your African violets. Damaged leaves and flowers leave your African violet vulnerable to bacterial diseases, viruses and other microorganisms, such as Nematodes. Finally, your grooming routine should always include an inspection for insects and other pests. Often, the pests themselves will be clearly visible. Even if you do not see them, however, most pests will leave symptoms. The appearance of any unusual characteristic on your African violets should be cause for further investigation. Remember that insects and other pests are easier to treat when their presence is discovered early.

Light Requirements

The amount of light that an African violet receives is important for its health and overall performance. African violets need light for photosynthesis. While photosynthesis is most often associated with a plant’s green leaves and stems, its most vital function is to convert carbon, hydrogen and oxygen (in the form of carbon dioxide and water) into usable energy called plant carbohydrates.

If an African violet does not get enough light, it will stop flowering and its leaves will begin to turn yellow. It is also likely that the African violet which is not getting enough light, will become rangy as it develops elongated leaves and stems. African violet should be placed near the window facing east. If sun light is too hot, use thin curtain on the window.

It is important to remember that African violets need at least eight hours of darkness, each day, in order to bloom. While African violets need a sufficient duration of light to produce florigen (flowering hormone), florigen itself does not trigger blooming until it is dark. For this reason, African violets should receive light for no more than 16 hours a day. To properly regulate the duration of light, you may want to consider getting a timer for your grow lights.

Temperature and Air Quality

In terms of temperature, humidity and other factors of air quality, African violets thrive in an environment that most people would consider pleasant. Therefore, if you feel comfortable, chances are, your African violets are feeling comfortable as well.

In general, you should keep the air temperature around your African violets as close as possible to 70 degrees F. Also, while extreme variations in temperature should always be avoided, do not be concerned about slight fluctuations between day and nighttime temperatures. Good air circulation, especially when the air is damp, helps prevent the growth of such fungi as Botrytis and Powdery Mildew.

Propagation

Choose a leaf that is fresh and fairly young but full size. Cut the stem at an angle, leaving a stem below the leaves that is 1 - 2 inches long. Fill a small pot (that has drainage holes) with a very light potting mix. (It can be bought at the Home Depot) Set the leaf into the prepared pot at an angle. Do not set it into the soil very deeply. Water and allow the excess moisture to drain away. Place the potted leaf into a clear plastic bag (zip-loc bags work well) and seal it tightly closed. You may wish to blow into the bag as it is sealed to puff it up with air. Set the leaf in a bright location out of direct sunlight. It normally takes about one month for the leaf to root and another month for the plantlets to appear.

How do I keep my African Violet alive?
Your African violet will thrive if you find a spot for it where it gets lots of REFLECTED light -- not direct sunlight, but reflected light. Get some African Violet plant food and feed it by putting the drops, in water, in a dish and sitting the potted plant in it so it will soak upthe nutrient through the roots. African violets don't do well if the leaves get wet, so this is the best way to water and feed them.

If you do this, you'll have sturdy and prolific flowering plants.

Enjoy!
Reply:put it at a sunny window if you have one, get a plant light if you don't have a sunny window. remember to water but not to soak the roots in water, be sure the water can drain out at the bottom.

may be you should add some details on how the plant is doing.
Reply:With my African violets, I start with the a soil specially made for African violets. You need a pot with good drainage, and you need to keep the soil moist ( not soaking wet). I also use a fertilizer specifically made for them too. Always be very careful not to get any water or dirt on the leaves. When this happens to me, I quickly get a paper towel and start dabbing the water off. There are even special brushes made for cleaning dirt from the leaves, but all I do is use the spray can air used for my keyboard to get the dirt and dust off. Also, African violets do need sun to promote blooms, but never in a window with direct sunlight lasting more than 4 hours. Good luck with your violets! Hope this helps.

When is the best time of year to grow an african violet?

You can grow an African Violet at any time of the year. They are an inside plant, and love being in filtered light. Water about once a week, by putting water in a bowl, setting the pot inside the bowl, until it takes up all the water. Check your plant at least once a week, to make sure it doesn't go completely dry. Also, to get it to bloom, use a 15-30-15 soluble plant food and feed it about once a month. Don't get the leaves wet.

What does the simile "Proud as a Violet" mean?

I read Charles Dickens "The Christmas Tale" and the simile was in it. I know the short story was published in England in the mid 1800's. Wondering how can a Violet be proud?

What does the simile "Proud as a Violet" mean?
That's odd, as it's usually the opposite; a "shrinking violet" or a "shy violet." Perhaps it has to do with the royal color of a violet -- purple is a majestic/royal/proud color.

What colors do you get when you mix blue, red, and yellow with orange, green and violet?

What colors they mix into.

What colors do you get when you mix blue, red, and yellow with orange, green and violet?
Actually this question is reduntant.

Red, yellow and blue mixed together make brown.

They are the primary colors.

Green comes from blue and yellow being mixed

and violet from red and blue and

orange from red and yellow-so if you mix them all togehter you get brown too.

Mud brown may be the exact answer.

Try it yourself and see.

What is the best way to propagate an African Violet? Why?

I'm doing a leaf cutting.....but I'm not sure....

What is the best way to propagate an African Violet? Why?
I do this a lot. Here's how. Choose a healthy looking leaf with at least a one inch stem. Pinch the leaf off half way down the stem. Use the eraser end of a pencil to poke a hole into the soil equal to the length of the stem. Put stem into hole and press soil around stem AND base of leaf. Root stimulating products are not necessary. Water plant as needed by using a spoon to carefully drip water around base of leaf. The leaf does not like to get wet. Put the plant in a sunny window. Do not cover it. Water once daily ( or less if soggy ) and be patient. This will take much time, but it works great. You will see baby leaves begin to grow from the base of the old leaf. I do not use fancy soil or fuss about cutting style and my plants have always grown fine.
Reply:I prefer to take a mature leaf, neither a very new one or a very old one. Cut the leaf stem down to about an inch and half in length if it's longer; don't cut directly across, but at an angle to the stem, so that plenty of tissue is exposed. Pot the leaf in a container of FRESH African violet potting soil; be sure the pot is labeled as to the variety of the leaf. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. It takes time, but in a few weeks you should start to see "babies" coming up through the soil. When the leaves are about the size of a dime, the young plants are big enough to be separated and planted individually.

Some folks use water because the roots seem to show up more quickly; however, I've found that water-rooted babies are a lot more fragile, since the water has been supporting the leaves during development, and I used to lose a lot of them that way. Soil rooting takes a little longer, but I get MUCH better plants that way, with strong leaf stems and a good root system. Likewise, I know that some people use rooting hormone when they propagate leaves; again, though, I've found that you get lots of roots this way, but not many leaves, and ultimately you may not get ENOUGH leaves to have a viable plant.

If you can provide some mild heat underneath the leaves (presuming you don't allow the soil to dry out), I've found that the plants root and grow considerably faster than in room-temperature air. I use some pet bed warmer pads for this purpose; you can get them on eBay for about $20, but they're certainly not a necessity. I use covered flats to start violet leaves, but you can also do something as simple as covering a pot with a clear plastic bag to retain moisture.

Enjoy your new plants!
Reply:I seem to have luck by placing the leaf in water until roots show and then place it in a pot with potting soil. You can also place it in a pot and water it until it roots. Both ways have worked for me.

What size ultra-violet filter should I buy?

I have a 100 gal pond that has cronic green algee. I want to find the correct size filter. The water pump has a 350 gal per hour return rate.

What size ultra-violet filter should I buy?
1. You only need 8 watt for a 100 gallon pond.

2. Reduce the flow into the UV Sterilizer with a diverter - the water needs a minimum exposure time to the sterilizer to kill the algae and whatnot.

3. Be patient - it won't happen overnight. It takes about 3 weeks.

4. Make sure you keep the biofilter running. The UVC will kill the algae, but the filter removes it. UVCs are only sterilizers not filters...

You'll be pleased. Check Lowes or Home Depot - they have economical ones - under $100.
Reply:You should get a #4 70 watt Ultra-Violet filter.

How soon can I plant Dahlia, Morning Glory, Violet and mixed wild flower seeds in North Texas?

North Texas is probably zone 7 so I would suggest after April 1st. After all danger of last freeze.

How soon can I plant Dahlia, Morning Glory, Violet and mixed wild flower seeds in North Texas?
Wait until no danger of frost.
Reply:Planted yesterday in Mesquite Tex
Reply:Wit dahlias, after the last frost. With the others, you can plant them anytime. Violets take the cold well, and some of the flowers in the wild mix do also.

We live in California and have already planted most things. All are doing well, even though the nights go down to 41. The sun is the key, and we are getting 65 right now during the day, with the sun on all of the growing areas.\

Good luck

Why is it that the bottom of the ocean goes green and then to blue/violet?

I know it has something to do with the larger wavelengths of light such as red and orange getting absorbed as it gets deeper into the ocean. Can anyone expand on this for me? Thanks.

Why is it that the bottom of the ocean goes green and then to blue/violet?
You are right! The wavelength of blue light allows it to go further than red light. This is also a reason that many deep sea creatures are red as opposed to black, because no red light can reach these depths they can't be seen by any other deep sea creatures.
Reply:When you view the ocean from above you are seeing what is left of light after it is absorbed and reflected. If you think of the ocean sand as "yellow", then when the ocean is shallow you are seeing a combination of blue and yellow, which is green.

When it is deep there is only blue with no reflection from the bottom so it is blue.
Reply:its possible it could be explained with quantum or atomic physics?

just like compounds only give off certain wavelengths, they only absorb the same ones. i have no basis for this but it could be that water absorbs more red than violet. and since water is a compound, it should have wider bands which could cover greater spans of wavelengths.

it could also be the same reason the sky is blue.

Is UV lamp has violet color of light? the one that we can use to verify genuine money?

is UV lamp has violet color of light? the one that we can use to verify genuine money?

if so, can i use this lamp to grow my green plants indoor?

Is UV lamp has violet color of light? the one that we can use to verify genuine money?
UV lamps do have a "violet" color, however, it's not truly violet, but ultraviolet (UV is in the visible spectrum). Plants do enjoy UV lamps indoors because they need a certain amount of UV to further photosynthesis. Don't forget that sun is best for them thought.
Reply:A true ultraviolet lamp emits ultraviolet light- a shorter wavelength than even violet. As plants use red and blue light to grow, giving them only ultraviolet light will only cause them to starve. Or mutate... ultraviolet light is used in labs to produce mutations in experimental organisms.

I doubt you have a true UV lamp tho... So probably no mutations for you.

How can the pelican flower smell like rotting meat? How can some smell good and others smell so bad?

The violet stands for faithfulness, the daisy for innocense, the lily for innocense all that smell good.?
Ah my dear, all that looks beautiful is not necessarily sweet. Sometimes the littlest and ugliest can smell so sweet it can take your breathe away. What some would call weeds are just as pretty to see. :D

The definition of boring is: Same sh*t, different day! You answered your own question.

I have actually done my eyeshadow like you before, now that I think of it. I own Mac Violet, and it is a nice color. Just try to switch it up sometimes, ok?
Reply:It is good to have verities but if you like it you wear it p.s. in order to keep your skin healthy you must wash it off at night

you shampoo hair then use the stuff like a conditioner. Leave it on for a while then rinse. then use a conditioner if you wish.It is good, i have some at home and may use it again as my hair is looking a bit too yellow. And it is shitting me off. I had to put my hair up again. But if it is a shmapoo as well as the toner downer then use a conditioner when u fininsh. I think u need to leave it on for a while though.

I have a one violet goby (dragon fish) ,it has hard time finding his food what can i do to make it eat ?
What are you trying to feed him? Dragon gobies are filter feeders and will often take frozen bloodworms or blackworms. I've also had them eat shrimp pellets after they've softened up, but chances are your other fish won't let them get to this point. Often, you won't see them eating because they will sift food out of the gravel. They are a bit on the shy side, so they won't try to get the food from the other fish. You may have to try target feeding him with a baster or use a tank divider to feed him separately if this is a problem.

Can CUTTINGS from "african violet" generate male plants only?

Some of my SAINTPAULIAS simply grow new circles of leaves, like cabbages do if you leave them grow in the kitchen garden for too long, but they haven't got any flowers.

Someone told me that mine are MALE plants and obviously will never give flowers. In this case I agree, but how can that be possible?

I cut some leaves from well-grown older plants to make new ones (the normal way everybody suggests) and this is the disappointing result!!!

And of course I'VE NEVER READ anywhere that such a thing might happen with saintpaulia's leaves.

Everywhere they say: simply plant your leaves and keep soil moist and new beautiful plants will grow and GIVE FLOWERS, which IS TOTALLY FALSE in my case!!!!

Have you any idea about that? Can "MALE PLANTS ONLY" stem from some of the leaves one uses to create new plants??

Can CUTTINGS from "african violet" generate male plants only?
My grandmother was a big african violet fan and obtained most of hers by cuttings (she had 3-4 dozen throughout her house at the height of her collection). Most, if not all, of which bloomed. They do have to mature - i think it may have been 2-3 years before they would actually bloom.

African violets can be picky, my mother was good at rooting and growing, but where my grandmother would have a dozen or so in bloom at once and 2 or three times a year, my mother would only get maybe 1 or 2 blooms once in great while.

I don't really know that much more about the african violet, but generally speaking, propagation from rooting stems creates clones, so as long as your taking a cutting from a plant that has bloomed, the rooting should bloom at once the conditions are right.

Good Luck.

Africian Violet Plant has spiders?

I found a bunch of red body spiders on my africian violet plant the other day, I removed them, but what can I do, will the plant die?

Africian Violet Plant has spiders?
sounds like red spider mites.they suck the sap from the plant through the leaves and can carry vectors..use a systemic insecticide..check the label to see if it will kill red spider mites

Which color is easier for the eyes to see red or Violet?

If the color red has the longest wavlenghtes and violet has the shortest which color is easier for the eyes to see. It whould be great if you could provide a good source!!! thx

Which color is easier for the eyes to see red or Violet?
Actually green is the easiest to see being in the middle of the visual spectrum at 550nm at it's purist.

If this isn't what you're looking for it's most likely to depend on the person. Because red %26amp; violet are both at the ends of the visible spectrum they should be about the same.

I'd guess red because the range of it's wavelength is slightly broader at 630-700nm (70) while violet is 400-450nm (50), that and there are more ambiguous shades of violet than red.

Of course on the other hand with violets smaller wavelength it may be easier to penetrate the human eye. The same logic applies to the wavelength of sound. Hence why smaller animals can hear higher pitches.

Reply:Sure, real easy. Nip off a real healthy looking leaf and put it in a water glass filled about 1 to 1 1/2 inches (you don't want the water to touch the leaf) and set it where you keep the plant. I don't know how long it will take to root--just keep an eye on it. Or, you can buy a rooting hormone to put on the cutting and put it in some vermiculite or potting soil to root. Make sure you use a good quality potting soil, not top soil.

Please answer ASAP because this lab report is due tomorrow!!!

What is the order of the reaction between crystal violet and sodium hydroxide?
I am currently working on a kinetics experiment in chemistry, and the order of the reaction is 1 in respect to both crystal violet and sodium hydroxide according to my experiment. I also found info on google that confirms this data.

How to get or make creme de yvette (violet liqueur)?

I've seen recipes calling for it in Old Mr. Boston and other older drink books, but it is not available anywhere. The fact that it is so elusive makes me want to try it all the more.

How to get or make creme de yvette (violet liqueur)?
Creme de Yvette hasn't been produced since the late 60's, IIRC. You -might- be able to find it at auction or somesuch (much like you can sometimes find vintage Absinthe), but I wouldn't count on it. There -is- a modern violet liqueur available- Benoit Serres Violette (www.benoit-serres.com). You can buy it here: http://www.thedrinkshop.com/products/nlp...

You might also try making your own- infuse brandy with violet petals and vanilla bean, and add a bit of sugar.

The meaning of Violet Hill by Coldplay?

I was just wondering how you interpreted it as. I absolutly love it but I came up with a few different possible meanings... And i'd really like to settle on one! Its brilliant

Thanks!

The meaning of Violet Hill by Coldplay?
well on the Scott Mills show on radio1 they were all confused by this as well. so they went and did loads of research and stuff and found out about some woman called Violet Hill in America who had met Chris Martin or something like that. so they rang her up and asked her questions like "have you heard of coldplay" and "do you know chris martin" and i dont know how popular coldplay are in america but everyone on the radio (and me) did seem to think that the way the woman answered seemed to make it quite obvious she had definetely heard of coldplay, and she had definetely met chris martin before.so the answer to ur question is

violet hill is someone who met chris martin.
Reply:I think the song Violet HIll is generally about a break up. And the one who broke the relationship is still in love with the person.

Was my answer too obvious?

:/ Report It

Reply:I haven't really thought about the meaning yet because I'm still listening to the melodic side of it.

I adore the chorus with it's harmonies, but I also love the very end of the song with just Chris and the piano. It's so simple and beautiful. I'd kind of like to hear a whole song of it - it has a sort of hymn quality which I find beatiful, and I'm not even religious.

I have an African Violet...How do I get it to perk back up?

We moved several states away. Since then, my poor plant seems to be withering away! Does anyone know anything about African Violets?

I have an African Violet...How do I get it to perk back up?
You need to put the African violet near a window that gets sun at least for a few hours a day, and if not direct sun it should get STRONG light.
Reply:african violet plant food sold at any home improvement store...follow the directions.
Reply:They need water from underneath and lots of indirect sun. Put them in a east or west facing window with a sheer and water them by watering the base without getting any water on the leaves. Most garden stores and a lot of grocery stores sell A. V. food.
Reply:try plant viagra or google the question... lol
Reply:You could be either over watering or under watering. Also you can get special plant food for African violets, try that. Read directions. In summer it should be by a northern window, in winter a southern window. Good luck
Reply:I beleive Miracle grow has an African Violet food. There are also several generic brands that can be purchased at a local hardware store in the lawn and garden section.
Reply:they don't like direct sun don't get the leaves wet and feed it with african violet formula as directed keep it warm probably climate shock

Is it possible for a child to be born and grow up with violet colored eyes their whole life?

Like actually violet, violet?

Is it possible for a child to be born and grow up with violet colored eyes their whole life?
Anything is possible through mutation. There is also a possibility that a someone with a gene for blue eyes has it expressed in such a way that it is very dark and appears violet
Reply:Elizabeth Taylor supposedly has violet eyes, it is what hse is most famous for. If they are real then the answer to your question is yes. Not sure if they are though but it is genetically possible.

Why do green plants grow the best under red/violet-blue?

i found my plants grow fastest under the red/orange color the fastest. Please explain me this in terms of wavelength.

Red = longest wavelength

Violet-Blue = shortest wavelength

Eventhough they are complete opposites, why do they BOTH (not one) work the best for green plants?

Why is it that Red is a warm color than the Violet? (Violet surely carry more energy; higher frequency, E= v X Plank's Constant).

Why do green plants grow the best under red/violet-blue?
In general plants use red and blue light for photosynthesis. Of the two Red is used the most.
Reply:Blue light is absorbed less efficiently than red due to higher energy.

Also, blue and red photons do different things within the cell. ie. they set off different sets of chemical reactions like controlling the circadium rhythm (red light at dawn, blue light at dusk etc.).

Chlorophyll a prefers red light over blue (although blue is preferred almost as much). Most plants have a higher ratio of chlorophyll a to b.

Plant wants to use all of the light to maximize energy absorption. They also have other pigments to absorb at other wavelengths.

This website lists some info on the blue and red action spectrums

http://www.biology-online.org/biology-fo...

red is warm compared to violet cause red wavelength is just "above" infrared (thermal radiation)

Hepatitis C Test

What is the energy of 1.2 mol of violet photons?

Violet light has a wavelength of about 410. nm

Its frequency is 7.32e14 s^-1.

The energy of one photon of violet light is 4.85e-19 J.

What is the energy of 1.2 mol of violet photons? ___kJ

What is the energy of 1.2 mol of violet photons?
1.2mol = 1.2mol x 6.022e23photons/mol ≈ 7.226e23photons

you're given

4.85e-19 J/photon

so

Energy

= 7.226e23photons x 4.85e-19 J/photon

≈ 350 kJ

Where would you buy inexpensive african violet seeds?

It's for science fair and I'm hoping that some local stores might have them. For example, Home Depot. (It's just easier than dealing with buying things online) Our biology teacher made us do botany so I really need to get started. Please guys, this would mean a lot if you knew where african violet seeds are sold. Thank you for your time.

P.S If you don't know a local store. You can also give me an online link to where its sold online. If you really can't think of any store. Thank you very much

Is it good the color of my motiff in my wedding is lavender or something violet?

this violet color is the color for the dead ,use in lent season sometimes in advent season. Is there no BAD effect in our family live,if ever i will choose this color as my motiff in our wedding.other people telling me and giving FEEDBACK, thats not good... . this my favorite color.im so very anxious about this....... i cannot start my wedding plan because of this! my wedding is next year.Jan.09.......

Is it good the color of my motiff in my wedding is lavender or something violet?
Lavender is *gorgeous* as a wedding color! My daughter had that and it was beautiful!! I made her wishing well and hung silk wisteria off it. It is not the color of the dead. Don't worry about it, hon...pick the color YOU want to have for YOUR wedding. It will be beautiful!
Reply:I think you should use what you like, but try to choose something light, not too dark. I think violet would be great and accuatly, I have already seen a wedding where the bridesmade wore light violet and it was gorgeous.

Some sites:

Good look
Reply:Use the color that you wish to use. I've seen PLENTY of weddings with lavender or violet. It is a very pretty color and it is your day, so you decide on what will make you happy.
Reply:It is your wedding and you should pick what makes you happy! Lavender is a great color. I know that you are saying during the advent season it is used as a color for the dead but that is only in Christian tradition. Look it up in other cultures and traditions, I'm sure lavender has many many different meanings. Good luck and congrats on the wedding! = )
Reply:In China white is the color of the dead - so try not to worry too much about superstitions, especially since it's your favorite color :) And anyway, Violet has really nice associations, too, of royalty, sumptuousness, and luxury. Also, I googled violet and found this:

"The violet flower is a pledge of faithfulness.

In his sonnets, Shakespeare used the violet as a symbol of humility and constancy in love. "

And also, isn't Lent about purification? I don't see any "death" connotations! I think these people telling you it's bad might have good intentions but they don't really know what they're talking about.

I think if you are worried that the decorations will remind people too much of lent/advent church services the accent colors %26amp; flower choices are going to make all the difference here.

If I were you I'd go to an upscale fabric store (NOT joanne fabrics!) and start having a look at the Lavender %26amp; Violet fabrics - Why? Because the textile studios have done all the hard work, they've picked out colors that look beautiful together, and they may even do combinations that you'd never expect or think up on your own.

If you see something with color combinations that you really fall in love with, you can buy a small amount of the fabric and let that be your guiding inspiration for your color theme:) (If you are REALLY in love with the colors you can always cut up the fabric to give pieces to "helpful relatives" who want to "assist" you with your decorations to make sure they stick to the colors on the swatch...)

Good luck!
Reply:Your colors should be anything that you like! If you want that color then use it! You won't be happy if you decide not to go with it. It would look great!

What is the difference between a Violet and an Iris? Are they different flowers, or the same?

They are different flowers, different subspecies and different smells as well.

violets tend to be smaller and grow closer to the ground, irises are taller, have wooder stems.

Try wikipedia :)

What is the difference between a Violet and an Iris? Are they different flowers, or the same?
They are both naturally purple, but they are entirely different flowers.

Violet is a low-growing woodland flower with heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are on delicate little stalks. The flowers themselves have distinctive shapes, facing horizontally rather than vertically. Violets are dicots - have branching veins in their leaves.

Irises are upright flowers with long, sword-shaped leaves. They are monocots with parallel veins in the leaves. The flowers have three petals hanging down and three petals upward in a kind of crown.

Do an image search for these flowers. They're quite common and there should be hundreds of pictures of them on the internet.
Reply:These are entirely different plants and flowers. You need to look some of these things up. You have a computer. They have so many search engines. Go to www.ask.com and put in first violet and then put in iris. Select the search option of pictures. You will see at a glance they are entirely different.

Enjoy the learning curve.

Cheers,

Lisa
Reply:Totally different. An iris grown from a korm , has a tall stem with 1-4 blossoms on the top of that. Violet is a low plant, lots of leaves grown sort of in clumps, is purple or white.
Reply:They are two way different flowers. Not only are Iris' and violets different, but there are also different types of Iris' and violets!
Reply:They are in different class man, totally different kind of flowers.

Would it be possible to put ultra violet strips on windows so birds don't fly into them?

Maybe until someone finds a way of doing this we could dot sun tan lotion on them.

Would it be possible to put ultra violet strips on windows so birds don't fly into them?
I am not aware that birds are frightened of either ultraviolet light or suntan lotion.

You can, however, get decals of hawks to place on the glass.

You can also get owl statuettes to sit outside the window or on the window sill. Owls will normally scare other birds away.

Find the statuettes at farm stores where they sell them to either scare away birds or to attract Turkeys during Turkey hunting season ( the Turkeys will gobble if they see an owl).

African Violet. I have an African violet container. Should I keep water in base at all times?

Should I let the violet dry out or should I keep water in the base at all times?

African Violet. I have an African violet container. Should I keep water in base at all times?
African violets like to stay sightly moist, but not wet. However, a bit of water in the base can be used to keep it humid, which they also like. Avoid watering from the top, as they do not like their leaves wet.
Reply:Do not keep water in the saucer. It leads to soggy soil which can lead to a multitude of problems, the most likely being some form of root rot or fungus gnats or shore flies. You can water from the bottom or top but in 15 minutes if there is any water in the saucer dump it.

If you touch the surface and soil particles stick to your finger because of the moisture it does not need watered. Water only when necessary. Overwatering is the #1 cause of death in houseplants.
Reply:My African Violets have done best by not watering from the base but by misting. Standing water in the base could lead to root rot.
Reply:I know these are supposed to be good but, I never had any luck with them. When I had african violets I went back to clay pots and watered them like I do all my plants.
Reply:I was a treasuer in an African Violet Society many years ago, to assure proper watering use the wick system. remove plant from container add a wick to the container through the bottom long enough to reach another container underneath put dirt and plant back into pot fill the undercontainer with water put the wick in the water and that it, check weekly if the water is down refill it, self watering. No quessing involved.

My African Violet leaves has white spots on them?

So what may cause this and can I save my plant? I have had it for 2 years.

My African Violet leaves has white spots on them?
Don't let water get on the leaves, it'll cause dead spots. Water that is room temperature is not so bad, but I don't do it at all. Don't allow sucker plants to grow on the main stem of the plant. Don't try to grow them outside. Don't place them in direct sunlight. Don't keep them in dark areas. Don't use any other pot other than a cheap 4-inch plastic pot. Don't use peat moss. Don't keep your plants' soil wet. Don't let the plant stay dried out. Don't leave dead flowers or leaves on your plant. Don't subject them to sudden temperature changes. Don't run over them with the car. Do not, do not, do not...
Reply:That is cold water spots. They don't like cold water, and will show spots if you drip some on them. It will be OK,by.

We see by the visible spectrum Light holds infra red and ultra violet too So what is it really like,?

Light is invisble until it reflects from something and then the object is recognised by the viewer. Humans can only see visible light.

We see by the visible spectrum Light holds infra red and ultra violet too So what is it really like,?
Infra-Red and Ultra violet are not in the visible spectrum, Hence we can't see them.

If your question is what would the world look like if we could see them then that's impossible to answer because it's impossible to determine if one person even perceives the visible spectrum in the same way as another. It's completely subjective.
Reply:Light spectrum is a continuum starting from low frequency of radio LW signal up to gamma rays.

So the generic "light" that enter your eyes is not formed by three color components but looks like a continuous function that span all the visible and non visible frequencies.

You eyes can only see around three specific wavelengths that we call red, green and blue. It is only a minimum part of the total information contained in light; other animals can see other frequencies. I.e. birds can see four frequency, so their color view is richer than ours; some people have a defect in one of the color sensor cells, so they color space is reduced.

Some materials are fluorescent, it means that they adsorb high frequency (short wavelength) light that we couldn't see, and emit it after a short while at a slightly lower frequency, that we can see.
Reply:Some people have plastic lenses inserted into their eyes to overcome cataract problems. Because of the different refractive index of the plastic is different to the organic original these people can see further into the violet end of the spectrum than the rest of us, so I guess the answer is ask one of them.
Reply:Most people can see the near end of ultra violet which is in fact violet light, and infra red which is in fact red light.

We are all individuals and so our capacities are quite different.
Reply:the visible spectrum does not normally include infra red and ultra violet.
Reply:Are there other, unknown wavelengths of light?

If ozone is created with ultra violet lights does that mean it keeps building itself?

If "ozone is created when ultraviolet radiation (sunlight) strikes the stratosphere, splitting oxygen molecules (O2) to atomic oxygen (O) then atomic oxygen quickly combines with further oxygen molecules to form ozone" doesn't that mean that it should be constantly building up in the stratosphere?

If ozone is created with ultra violet lights does that mean it keeps building itself?
Yes, ozone is constantly being created and destroyed and recreated by UV light in the upper atmosphere. The destruction of ozone is what absorbs the harmful UV rays that the ozone layer protects us against, so as long as there is elemental oxygen in the atmosphere, the ozone will always be created and destroyed as the sun rays hit it.
