What would happen if you do not apply Gram's iodine after staining the crystal violet?

This question is in microbiology.

What would happen if you do not apply Gram's iodine after staining the crystal violet?
The Gram stain is crystal violet that must be bound to iodine in order for the stain to work. When you add iodine to the crystal violet, you are making a huge complex; in gram-negative bacteria, where the peptidoglycan layer is thin, the large complex can slip out and you do not see a purple stain. In Gram-positive bacteria, the crystal violet-iodine complex is too large to pass through the multi-layered peptidoglycan layer. Remember that the Gram-stain does not depend on peptidoglycan, but rather its thickness, as yeast cells with very thick cell membranes stain Gram-positive.

If iodine is not included in the stain, the crystal violet will not stick to the bacterial cell wall, and the stain will wash off both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria during the decolorization step.
Reply:it will make result what we have be in correct. cause the reaction is not completed.

Why doesnt my African Violet bloom?

in 2002 i bought an African Violet for my desk at work. it was blooming when i bought it and it has never bloomed since. the leaves are beautiful and green, i get many compliments on it still but i never get blooms.

Why doesnt my African Violet bloom?
I have NO idea if this really works, but my mother, years and years ago, told me that the ends need to be pinched off routinely so that an African Violet can bloom How this is done, I can't begin to tell you. Maybe a question on pinching off ends on plants would be in order. I always heard my Grandmother talking about pinching off the ends of plants too and she had gorgeous flowering plants.
Reply:You should also try to feed it.

water may not be enough. especially if you have not given it any nutrients since 2002.
Reply:An African violet needs a southern Exposure window for the sunshine. Also it is best to water it from the bottom up, like have the flower pot sitting on a saucer or dish and pour the water in there for it soak up. Perhaps even some fertilizer made especially for African violets would help as well. Some people are just naturally lucky with those plants, I know I have a hard time keeping them alive and blooming too. good luck
Reply:My violets get a lot of direct/indirect sunlight in my kitchen. My kitchen also faces south, but I'm sure if they were in a west facing window they'd do just as well. I don't pay attention to how many times they bloom a year, but it has to be at least twice. I forget to water them sometimes, but on average I water them once every 2 weeks. I use whatever water is available..water I've left sitting out, direct from the tap water and water from bottles of water that I haven't finished. I've fertilized them with a dilute mix of miracle grow once or twice in the past 5+ years... I think the biggest key is sunlight, and the amount they recieve each day. In an office, they (I'm assuming you're in an office like mine where you might get lots of light, but not bright or direct light) probably aren't getting enough...

I've read that people have success by allowing them to soak up their water from the bottom, but I haven't noticed any difference in the growth of mine... I just dump water on top of them.

Why does the wood of the Black Locust tree fluoresce when exposed to ultra violet light?

I know that normal fluorescence is caused by the inclusion of minerals such as uranium salts. But this is most commonly seen in items such as yellow (Vaseline Glass) glass where the color yellow comes from the uranium. Now I received a same of Black Locust lumber from a friend and to my amazement it does fluoresce. Another of its properties is that is an extremely hard wood and rot resistant up to 70 years. If anyone can answer my questions or give me some suggestions of where or how to search, I will appreciate it. Thanks! Sheri

Why does the wood of the Black Locust tree fluoresce when exposed to ultra violet light?
flourescence is the absorbtion (by hydrogen for example) of 'invisable' light energy by material capable of transforming it and emitting it at wavelengths visible to the human eye. simply it is the process of converting ultrviolet light to visible light

in wood flourescense is a species-dependant phenomena which results from the natural presence of flourescent extractives in some types but not others

the black locust must have theses chemicals which absorb uv light and emitt visible

Does gentian violet work for yeast infections?

I've heard it can be applied to a tampon and used for yeast infections, but it says for external use only.. hmm.. any comments?

Does gentian violet work for yeast infections?
yes it does and you can pour it on to a tampon and insert it. also yogurt works the plain unflavored kind. you can fill up a cardboard tampon tube with the yogurt and "inject" it up there or you can freeze the tube and insert it that way...less mess.
Reply:It works very well!!! When I was pregnant and couldnt get rid of my yeast infection I just took a small soft paint brush and painted myself. I really havent had one since then. I was the only hing that worked for me!!

How do you grow a new African violet from an existing plant?

African violets are propagated from seed or, more frequently, from cuttings.

With seeds, you can obtain a large number of new plants, but they may not resemble the parent very closely. Some amateur growers pollinate their plants themselves to produce new hybrids, while others buy their seed from specialized nurseries.

Propagation from cuttings is more common. The advantage of this method is that the new plants will all be identical to the parent and will bloom more quickly.

Taking leaf cuttings is a common technique, among both commercial and private growers.

Select a strong, healthy stem that is neither too young nor too old. First water the plant, and then remove a stem from the second-last row of leaves.

Cut the stem to 3 to 5 cm on the diagonal with a sharp knife.

Insert the stem at a 45° angle into a rooting medium such as vermiculite, ensuring that the leaf does not touch the surface. You may wish to put a small stick or piece of plastic under the leaf to hold it in place.

Rootlets will form quickly if the pot is placed in a bright spot out of direct sunlight; keep it warm from underneath, the rooting medium evenly damp and the humidity in the air constant. A plastic bag or glass may be placed over the cutting, provided that it doesn’t touch the leaf.

Tiny plantlets will appear at the base of the stem in about 5 to 12 weeks.

As soon as the leaves reach 2 cm in diameter, separate them and pot them up separately.

Avoid overwatering the new plants, which will rot easily.

An African violet may also be propagated by dividing the offshoots that form on the crown of an older plant.

How do you grow a new African violet from an existing plant?
The last were good instructions but you may which to use a rooting hormone like Rootone also.

Just dip the cut end in a small amount of the powder.

XXL Violet, should there be any products in my hair as it my affect the colour and cause irratation ?
The end result will depend on the natural colour of your hair. The lighter it is the more dramatic the colour. However I wouldnt recommend lightening it first. Some hairdyes say wash your hair first others just bung it straight on. Read the instructions first. I dye my hair all the time and just wash and style it as normal. You could try a similar colour in a wash in/wash out product. These only last for about 3 washes, but will let you see what the result would be like. Good luck!

What brand of contact lenses would appear dark violet on my dark brown eyes? Those I've tried look grayish.

Some of the violet contacts I have tried are Freshlook Colors in Violet and Flexwear in Amethyst. I'm hoping for a darker shade of violet rather than a lavender effect, which kind of resembles cataracts or the eyes of elderly people (grayish and washed-out).

Any suggestions? Preferably brands that are locally available here in the Philippines.

Hey, how do i get rid of the violet bags under the eyes? best to prevent and eliminate/improve ?

its those violet bags when u wake up u see them.

how to prevent them and when u got em how to eliminate them (fast) tricks? thanks

Hey, how do i get rid of the violet bags under the eyes? best to prevent and eliminate/improve ?
To prevent - get at least 8 - 10 hours of sleep at least 5 times a week

drink 8 - 10 8oz. glasses of water a day

wear no make-up 1-2 days a week and wash make-up off as

soon as possible when you can

use an eye gel like the one from oil of olay

To get rid of? Impossible. To minimize:

Put hemorrhoid creme on about 30 minutes before make-up

use a yellow or light colored concealer under foundation

don't use blues, purples or greys or dark colors in eye make-up because those colors accentuate the bags and circles
Reply:try using tea bags

Reply:Sleep. Napping and sleeping will help clear that all up.
Reply:I was told there is a type of cream you can get that contains mostly vitamin K , I don't know the name of it though. Hope that helps
Reply:Plastic surgery, cucumber slices, block out - makeup

Eating sweet things and wheat products aggravates the problem.

Kidney problems can also contribute to it

drink enough water.
Reply:are you an albino?

if so, use white-out.

works a treat
Reply:use good vitamine E cream
Reply:take atleast 8 hours sleep. You can use tea bags aswell but i would suggest that take a spoon metallic one and pour some chilled water on it and then keep it on your eyes for sometime and repeat this three to four times.

How can I revive my african violet ?

I thought I was doing okay. I had a lot of very nice flowers come out, and then I'm not sure what happened. They all roted and fell off :( Any suggestions ?

How can I revive my african violet ?
Just the flowers?

If so.. why do you say rotted?

They will brown and die off naturally but new flowers will keep coming on. When I hear "rot" I think overwatering however you would be losing the leaves too.

I have found my african violets always did best in an east facing window. Be sure to get rid of the florist cellophane around the plastic pot. They don't like wet soggy roots.

If it is in a decorative pot, is there a hole for drainage?

Be sure not to get water on the leaves when you water, they'll get a little droopy when they need it. Use fertilizer for african violets. When you dust off their fuzzy leaves use a new toothbrush that has never had tootpaste on it. The floride damages the leaves and you will lose the plant. There are terrific little self watering pots just for African Violets. Take a look, their cute and make them happy!
Reply:Perhaps you gave it too much water. They always prefer being watered from below.

Don't worry, -if there is water in the pot, tip it out and wait until it seems almost dry before giving more water.

They will soon flower again if they have been happy there before.

Their preference is for indirect sunlight, but plenty of light.

What is the difference between Ultra violet light and black light?

Ultra Violet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than soft X-rays. It can be subdivided into near UV (400–200 nm wavelength; abbrev. NUV), far or vacuum UV (200–10 nm; abbrev. FUV or VUV), and extreme or deep UV (31–1 nm; abbrev. EUV or XUV).

Black light (also Wood's light) is the common name for a lamp emitting electromagnetic radiation that is almost exclusively in the soft near ultraviolet range, and very little visible light. In many areas this type of lighting is more commonly referred to as simply "UV light".

What is the difference between Ultra violet light and black light?
No difference. Just a scientific name and a common name for the same thing.

What is the best method for making candied rose and violet petals?

Making candied flower petals is simple. You merely wash the petals, allow them to dry and them dip them in a beaten egg white. They are then dipped in sugar and dried overnight. This crystallizes the sugar, resulting in a hardened petal. You do use raw egg whites for this recipe, so there is a slight risk of giving guests salmonella when you prepare these. For this reason, you should use pasteurized eggs, which will not harbor the bacteria.

What is the best method for making candied rose and violet petals?
beat an egg white to soft peak stage. Dip petals in egg white, then coat in superfine sugar. Set aside to dry. Use as decoration or garnish.
Reply:If you would prefer to do this WITHOUT using eggs, you can paint the petals lightly with glycerine (also called glycerol) before coating in sugar - it's an easily-available sugar alcohol used in cooking. :o)

I have an african violet plant inside, is several years old. It has never produced any flowers.?
They like to be pot bound but they also have to be fed. There are a number of African violet foods on the market. They like indirect, but fairly bright light. A north window is perfect. Water them under the pot, and leave them to soak for about half an hour. They will draw the water up and get wat they need without wetting the leaves which makes them rot. Avoid getting the leaves wet if you can. Once or twice per month, feed them with the African violet food through the watering system. Let them get dry between waterings. Schultz African Violet Food is a good choice.

Every three years or so, it is worth re-potting them with new soil made specifically for them.

I have had an african violet for years! My friends are amazed at the size, and quite frankly so am I. It gets the afternoon sun, its in the window, no special soil, and gets watered only when it is dry. I think the trick is to constantly rotate it, remove dead or dying flowers immediately, and it wouldn't hurt to tell it how good its looking! Good luck!

How do you define color violet to a blind person?

most call center asked out of the blue questions like " how do you define color violet or orange or yellow to a blind person"?

How do you define color violet to a blind person?
I would tell them its position on the electromagnetic spectrum
Reply:You don't. You can't describe color to someone who has never known sight. You can't describe it without naming other things you'd have to see to understand. "it's a dark color" Blnid people don't know dark. "It's a lighter color than purple" Blind people don't know light, or purple.

Explaining color to a blind person is about as hard as it would be for a blind person to explain seeing nothing (not even Black) to a sighted person. You just can't understand it without seeing it.

What you could do (and what I've done with my boyfriend who is totally blind) is name things that are that color for information's sake. "Some flowers are violet. Your shirt is violet." etc. Or how the color relates to things. "Your violet shirt makes your eyes more noticeable and attractive" or something like that.
Reply:try definig violet to him by essence of violet stuffs like lavender, plums and grapes e.t.c

just guessng.....
Reply:Do they know science? Check the wikipedia article I'm linking in sources about electromagnetic radiation and they or you can read that to explain violet. Violet is around 400nm (nano meters) wavelength.

If they were born blind, then they probably have zero concept of color, although I have read that the visual part of the brain is often side-wired to other senses (thus you get people who "see" musical notes or smells). Perhaps you could ask them if they have an sense of something like that and find something that you both match with violet??

Or more indirectly, find some things that are violet, and have them remember the associated smells, other senses that come with those. Purple flowers, purple sunsets, .... ?
Reply:If they were born totally blind then there is no way to describe it to them.
Reply:Tell a the color puple but a little more red with it

Are there any contact lenses for dark eyes in strong, vibrant colors like violet or emerald green (Or even a nice bright grey)?

Where can I find violet contact lenses for dark eyes?
Ya there is tons..but my advice would be to try to look for the most natural color you can find..cos honestly i can spot fake contacts from a mile away...and i think anyone can..there is just something really not natural about them..even if the color is natural they like POP off the eyeball..but most of the time the color isnt even natural looking.
Reply:Hi MyFire, You need to see an eye doctor to see if you can wear contacts. I had to do this before I could get them. I need to do this first and they will show you want colors they have. If you don't see what you want may be they can order them for you. Check it out and see.

What is the difference between purple and violet?

Purple and violet are the same color. Some will say that violet is a lighter version of purple, or that it is a bluer version of purple. In all honesty they are the same. It seems that violet is the overall consensus when talking about that color, only because it works better in naming other colors, like violet-red and violet-blue. In the end, just call it violet.

What is the best way to take care of an African Violet?
I love African Violets, and have many in my house. To answer your question on how long to leave your violet in the sun, it depends how hot of a climate you live in. I live in Oregon and I leave them in the sun all day, even in the summer. They can get burnt and wilt from the sun if it gets too hot, so take that into consideration. They have special african violet pots that allow the water to drain and soak through slowly. They are very prone to rot if they are over watered. They don't need to be clipped ever. But if youre very successful, then a second plant might grow from the base of your first plant, then you'll need to seperate them. I hope this helps you, good luck!
Reply:I did EVERYTHING to keep mine alive, It passed on one day

I threw it in the mulch pile .It was dead. it grew and flowered,

they need shade some from the sun.a little bit moist All the time I assume

and rich dirt.and act indifferent to it.
Reply:Good question, they die if you just breathe close to them it's ridiculous. There is special food looks like ink and it's in a little bottle with dropper. No too much water, no cold, not to hot.Good luck, mine died anyway b/c few times they were outside overnight i forgot to bring them in and was too cold.I hope this helped a little and hope you have more luck than I.
Reply:Defused light, water from below, under the leaves, after it dries out and just leave it alone. The problem most folks have is they pay too much attention to them. They like to be tight in a pot, and will bloom that way, do not keep repotting them. Additionally, they could branch a whole new plant if growing well! Let the branch get firmly established before pulling up the plant and splitting it....I have eight violets just at work and 2 of them are more than 5 years old and still blooming beautifully! Good luck!
Reply:They don't like direct sunlight. Don't overwater them. When you do water them, always water from the bottom. Best to seek advice of a florist or via the internet.
Reply:They don't like direct sunlight but diffused. They sure don't like wet feet. Water just the dirt by lifting up the leaves so nothing gets wet. There is a special blend of potting soil you can use. If you life where it is a darker winter they benefit greatly by plant lights. Of course they love plant lights all the time but you should follow manufacturers recommendations. Also checkout your library or e-bay for books:)

I have bought some dark violet calla lilies and when i potted them in Mid August the flowers came white?

They turned out white with only some hints of pink. I live on a warm island around 35C chould it be the reason why they became white? Thanks

I have bought some dark violet calla lilies and when i potted them in Mid August the flowers came white?
I don't think the heat had anything to do with the color change. You more than likely purchased mis-labled tubers. Did you pick them from a "bulk" bin at the garden center? They may have been tossed into the wrong bin by other buyers, or they may have been mislabled at the growers locale before shipment was made. The heat will not change the color, as calla's grow best in warmer climates anyway. If it gets too hot however, they should be planted in a partly shady location for best flowering. They also like a loose, well drained soil. Here is a link with some info on growing Calla's and some of the problems associated with their culture. Hope this answers your question.

I painted my bathroom a violet mist, what color do I use for trim and cupboards that are white currently?

you should play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family %26amp; color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

Violet goes great with green. It'll give your bathroom a calming, garden feel.
Reply:a safe way, is to go down the color chip a couple of shades darker....sherwin williams paint has a fan deck where all of the colours go together [pic any 2 or3 and they will go to gather] cool hu leave the ceiling white your color will reflect up any way,the room is small, darker would shrink the room

Option 2: Paint the cupboards a very light yellow-green and accent with a medium to bright yellow-orange. Keep the trim white to break up the constant flow of color.

I was wondering what color flowers would look the best with violet colored geraniums, and lavendar colored?
pink begonias would be nice. Something dark royal purple sets off lavender well--petunias, for example, or verbena. White becopa or sweet alyssum is nice with lavender-colored plants, too.
Reply:If you have a lot of sun (heat?) begonias may not work for you. I use a dark purple and lavender verbena, lavender trailing lantana, lavender yarrow, and then throw in some bright yellow calendula here %26amp; there. I also have some bright red petunias for a little extra color. We are zone 8, with summer temperatures averaging low to mid 90's to 3-4 weeks of 100 degrees. The plants I've named are in full sun and do great.
Reply:Actually, I'd suggest using the color from the opposite side of the color wheel--yellow. You might try adding some yellow and purple pansies, yellow or white irises or daylilies, Of the ones you've named, though, I'd go with the pink.

What's the difference between the color violet and the color purple?

Theoretically, "purple" is a mixture of blue and red wavelengths, whereas "violet" reflects only the violet wavelengths of the spectrum. In practice, the use of both terms in English is highly imprecise.

What's the difference between the color violet and the color purple?
It's generally accepted that violet is a light shade of purple... rather like pink is a light shade of red.
Reply:hues of white mixed in.
Reply:violet has a blue tint to it.

Reply:the different between the two colors is that violent is much brighhter than purple and violent draws people mind to it self

What's the difference between "purple" and "violet" and how big is the difference?

The chief difference is one of nomenclature; specifically violet is the term for a portion of the visible light spectrum, occurring between 400 and 450 nanometers; and purple is the name we use to describe a blending of perceived color but is not a member of the named regions of the visible EM spectrum, contrary to what another said above, and in fact red is in the far opposite range of the visible light spectrum, also contrary to what was said above.

Picture it so:

400-450nm: Violet

450-500nm: Blue

500-570nm: Green

570-590nm: Yellow

590-610nm: Orange

610-750nm: Red

In terms of color pallettes and color ramps, and I refer to computer pallettes, again violet occurs in the regions furthest from red.

In terms of color mixing, purples are achieved by mixing blues and reds, whereas violets are, well, violets.

Lest this become confusing, let me hasten to clear it up in one sentence.

Purple is the result of mixing red and blue light,

Violet is a spectral color.

So, yes, there is a difference, rather there are quite a few differences.

What's the difference between "purple" and "violet" and how big is the difference?
you're quite welcome! ~smile

PS. millions of color combinations possible in color ramps.. that's confusing. Human eyes can discern a few hundred shades of grey...

that's amazing... it's all amazing... considering the tiny piece of the EM spectra we do see..

Reply:Purple is made from the primary colors blue and red. When you are to the bluer side, you have lavender. when you go toward the red element you get violet. There are only 3 primary colors and they are red, blue and yellow. All colors are made from these. Look at a crowd on TV from far away in the grandstands and you

will have a surprise at only seeing the colors all broken down to the 3 primary colors, red, blue and yellow!! @8=)

How would you describe the color violet to a blind person?

Consider that the person was born blind.

How would you describe the color violet to a blind person?
Violet is a visual thing, and to descibe it to a person who cannot see would be extremely difficult, but you must somehow engage the other sences.

Taste is a good one...try a concord grape , as was suggested above.Scent is another....I would try the fragrance of lilacs. For touch, I would use violets...they are very delicate, like the color itself. They have a very faint odor, to most, but because of the heightened sensitivity of a blind person, he may be able to detect an odor. Violet does not have a sound associated, unfortunately.
Reply:Describing a color is about as easy as naming an object that is said color. That's a good, general way to go about it.

Because the person is blind, and has been so since birth, it would be quite difficult. Having had no actual experience with visible color the person could theoretically imagine anything they wanted to regardless of how you describe it. What they imagine and how they describe it to you may be completely different from how you see the color violet.
Reply:As for tastes chocolate can be good too.(I know it normally reminds you of brown, but if you want to imply luxury and royalty of violet,it's useful.)

Also it's a color used to show magic and wisdom and sometimes exotic and artifitial things. The feeling can be described lukewarm.(between hot red and cold blue).

For music I think a homonic piano piece would be suitable.

for example piano sonata no.18 by Beethoven.

For more information you can read books about color psychology.
Reply:some people who are blind can actually see a little bit but mostly only see shadows and lights. if they are born blind it might be a little worse because as apposed to someone who just became blind later in life, someone who is born blind has never seen anything. at all. so they don't know what anything looks like.

Now for describing the color violet to a person who is born blind never seeing anything before it would be difficult to explain it to them because normally you would say its like purple a mix between blue and red but they don't know what blue or red is or what it looks like so it would be extremely hard for them to picture it and for you to describe it
Reply:since people who have been blind their entire lives know nothing about color, i would say that to describe violet would be to take them outside on an early morning and let them feel the predawn, temperature and mood of the setting. or to play a moving peice on a violin solo.
Reply:Violet is a really deep purple so I would say it is like midnight on a summers day. all warm and cosy and velvetty and don't forget purple is a royal colour.
Reply:if you are on the beach at sunsite time close your eyes.. and feel the warm of the sun on your skin and at the same time feel the cold sand under your feet.. that is the violat color feels 4 me
Reply:Give them something that smells of jasmine. That's a very familiar aura to the color violet. IMHO.
Reply:Why that particular colour??
Reply:Give them a concord grape. Tastes very purple.
Reply:it would be bright white thats wat i would think if i were blind

What is the proper ratio of blue to red to make violet?

Ive taken a leaf cutting from my african violet and its produced a small offshoot of a new plant. Now what?

Do I cut off the main big leaf I started with and repot the little sprout? Or will it die if I cut off the main starter leaf?

Ive taken a leaf cutting from my african violet and its produced a small offshoot of a new plant. Now what?
Wait until the plantlet is of sufficient size to survive on its own, normally about 5-6 weeks after development. By this time, the plantlet should have developed roots and a rosette of leaves. Carefully unpot leaf and plantlet and the plantlet should just pull away from the leaf. Repot plantlet.
Reply:I repot the whole thing, big leaf and little sprout.
Reply:I have done this time and again. When your little plant gets a second leaf, snip off the big leaf you started it from, if you don't have to do not repot for a year or so. If you do repot put in a plastic pot with a rounded edge on it, they hold moisture better and your plant won't lose leafs from being on a sharp edge.
Reply:leave the big leaf on, and repot into enough soil to live and the big leaf will eventually die off.

What can I do to make my African Violet pedals more green and shiny.?

I have seen some that look like a deep green and lustre pedals. Do I need a fertilizer or do I need to put something on the actual leaf? thanks

What can I do to make my African Violet pedals more green and shiny.?
Petals, not pedals (those are on bicycles). African violet leaves are naturally hairy, never shiney. Take a soft brush (like a paint brush) and clean them. You can wash the leaves in warm water, no soap.

Ditto info on giving the plant a bit of fertilizer to green up the leaves, but they will never be dark green. Could be your plant needs slightly more light, but not direct sunlight.
Reply:African Violet leaves will never be shiny they are fuzzy.

Watered down tea is good to water them and they like to be in groups and do much better with two or more.

African violet fertilizer, they do not like things on their leaves.

They want east or north light. If not blooming not enough light if brown on leaves too much light.

They like humidity not necessarily moisture.
Reply:Leaves are hairy, furry, Do Not put water on African Violet leaves, it kills them. Always water (fertilize) from the bottom. PeTals are on flowers.
Reply:you cant do any thing. your plant is just as healty only you have a different species than him. yous is suppost to hsve fuzzy light green leaves
Reply:Grow them in a high humidity environment i.e. a kitchen or a bathroom. They will grow well in dry air but look better overall where it is humid and warm. However don't wet the leaves as this can cause spotting.
Reply:African Violets (saintpaulia) don't normally have shiny leaves,to the best of my knowledge. The leaves could be described as rough, with a hairy surface.

Nothing would make the common plant shiny,it would be good to know what you've seen.
Reply:fertilizer would do wonders for your plants go out and buy some.you will be happy.

What tea can I use to get a violet or pinkish stain when tea staining?
Rosehips are the pods that form at the base of the rose flower, so don't get confused with rose petals or leaves. Sometimes they are called rose haws as well. Many varieties of roses form hips, particularly wild roses (Rosa rugosa). Within the little red-orange globe are the rose seeds.

From a health perspective, they are best known for their high content of vitamin C. There is approximately 1,700 mg of C in 100 gm of dried rosehip. That's a heck of a lot more than what's in an orange.

Native Americans have been using rosehips as tea for thousands of years, and when the tea is finished, the hips were added to stews or soups. There was just too much nutrition in a rosehip to let it go to waste.

To make tea with whole rosehips, you'll need around 5 of them per cup of water (or 2 teaspoons, if you are using pieces). If you are using the whole hips, make sure to steep for at least 10 minutes. You can purchase rosehip tea in bags containing crushed pieces of the pod. Rosehips are often included in herbal blends (especially hibiscus), but can be purchased on their own. Rosehip tea has a tangy, tart flavour and a pinkish colour.

Whats the difference between the colours violet and purple?

could you kindly suggest me sites where I can view these colours?

Whats the difference between the colours violet and purple?
look at the wikipedia site. they show and name a number of purple and violet colors.

Violet would be the color of wavelengths which are shorter than blue.

Purple in its strict sense is always a color mix of red and blue. It will excite the blue AND the red receptors in your retina. It is a non-spectral color. A rainbow does not contain purple, only violet.

But in general usage the distinction often isn't made, though violet shades should be more blue and purples more red.
Reply:Purple is much darker; similar to blue. Violet is closer to reds.
Reply:I think of violet as being a darker version of purple

How to dress appropiatley in ultra-violet lights?

I have my science fair project wher i will eb in a room wtih ultraviolet type b lights. How should i dress in order to not get sick or get cancer?

How to dress appropiatley in ultra-violet lights?
Compare the intensity of the lights with the UV content of sunlight. If it's no greater, just dress like you're going out into bright sunlight. You've heard all the hype about covering up, wearing hats and sunglasses (be sure they block UV), and using sunscreen. Our body actually needs some UV light to synthesize vitamin D2.
Reply:ultraviolet rays can be dangerous! you should dress up and yes you could get cancer
Reply:Ultraviolet lights can be bad for your eyes, wear protective sunglasses. Laundry detergents today have a dye in them that reacts to ultraviolet light. You will glow if you wear bright white clothes, but not get cancer. UV lights are used in tanning salons. Cover your skin if you do not wish to get a tan. There is UV in sunlight. Use sun screen.
Reply:Bundle up in luminescent colors if you wanna be attracted- or just whatewer else, if you just wanna intoxicated at that party.

My african violet isn't doing so well, should I just throw it out?

It hasn't bloomed since last April. Months ago I repotted it with African Violet soil and added some time-release fertilizer. But it still hasn't bloomed yet. It is in a cute tin mini-bucket. I put holes in the bottom and rocks in the bottom for drainage, then added the soil and fertilizer.

Some of the bottom leaves started dying before I repotted it so I cut them off. Now the plant is so small. There is small growth coming in on the top, and its very green. Should I just give up? I don't think it's going to bloom again.

Or do you have any tips to make it bloom?

My african violet isn't doing so well, should I just throw it out?
Repot it and when doing that, put some dirt in th bottom, and then flat rocks about the size of a silver dollar like 4 or 5 then more dirt. This will give the roots something to hang onto. Also water it really really good till it can't hold anymore and then put it in a really dark closet for about a week, then bring it out into direct sunlight. Don't forget it in the closet though.
Reply:1. Avoid the metal containers -- African violets actually like plastic pots.

2. For the most part, leave the plant in the container it came in -- if it is plastic. (Also, African violets tend to like to be root bound.)

3. Don't place an African violet in direct light.

4. Don't water it until the soil is dry and don't get water on the leaves (some people water from the bottom).

5. Fertilize it but do so sparingly and don't overdo the nitrogen.

5. Make sure that the pot it is in has drainage.

I hope this helps you and your African violet. If all else fails, throw it and buy another one. These are tempermental little plants and it takes a while to learn how to take care of them.
Reply:Well it really depends on what the flower is actualy reacting too... Example: Violets don't like alot of direct sunlight. They prefer diffused lighting or artificial lighting. Also try to avoid spraying water onto the leaves, violets can sometimes be susceptible to fungus and other bacteria which will rot their leaves, thus killing the plants. Soil that is rich in phosphates also seem to work best.

Here is a quick plan to try and help:

1) Change the current soil, and use Miracle Grow potted plant soil mixture. AVOID using metal containers... Metal and plants don't mix very well.

2) Insert a straw into the soil and use this to deliver water.

3) Avoid sunlight and place the flower in a location that gets light, just not direct sunlight like an office a desk or other location.

4) I've also found a neat trick that works on a lot of plants like your violet, use a piece, a small piece of orange peel and bury it under the soil so it can't be exposed to air. This acts as a natural fertilizer and will help over time...
Reply:short sweet and simple put the violet on the window sill in the bathroom in front of the half that doesn't open it Will love it
Reply:Make sure when you are watering it you don't get water on the leaves.
Reply:During the winter months plants will go dormant. They usually start to come back when spring is approaching. The won't bloom during the winter months either. I feed mine a violet food that is made just for them. Water the plant from the bottom and avoid getting water on their leaves as it will kill the leaves. I keep my plant in direct sun, it grows like crazy every spring and continues through the summer months. Cut any dead leaves or flower stems from the plant as best as you can. As they rob the plant of nutrients.

African violet leaf splotches?

Several of the leaves on my mature African violet plants have tannish-colored splotches on them. The plants are watered from the top once weekly using a well-known brand of African violet liquid fertilizer diluted 14 drops per 1/2 gallon of water.

None of the plants is in direct sunlight. They all bloom well; the leaves are not limp. My city water is chlorinated; is this the problem? Should I let the tap water sit for a day or two before using it to water the violets, or should I decrease the amount of fertilizer?

African violet leaf splotches?
I have had African Violets for many years and have always set the pots into containers of water to let the water be absorbed up from the bottom. I remember reading a time or two that the leaves can be damaged by getting water on them. I don't usually let the water sit for a day or two before setting them into it for watering and they are always happy and healthy and bloom quite nicely. I do water other house plants from a watering can with water which I try to allow to sit for at least a day. I also almost never fertilize my African Violets. My feeling is that 14 drops of fertilizer per 1/2 gallon of water sounds like an awful lot. Unless, as you wrote, the fertilizer is VERY diluted first. Also, I let my African Violets get totally dry before soaking them...maybe about once every three or four weeks. They are African plants, I guess, so they like to have a dry period. Good luck.
Reply:The spots may be caused by the chlorine in the water. definitely, leave the water for one day. that will allow the cholrine time to dissipate.

The spots may also be water spots. try watering from the bottom. To do this you need openings in the bottom of the pot, or a special bottom watering pot.

We have dozens of these plants and those two simple tasks have eliminated spots.
Reply:That sounds like a fungus. You need something to kill the fungus. Go to a nursury and ask them what would be good. I would get a pot that you can water from the bottom, as sometimes African Violets are so delicate that top watering gives them diseases.

How do I get rid of Wild Violet in my front yard grass?

I have already tried all kinds of weed killers, even Roundup and I still can't kill it.

How do I get rid of Wild Violet in my front yard grass?
The newest material to use is called carfentrazone. It goes by the name of "Speedzone" and its manufactured by PBI Gordon. It can be mixed with your normal broadleaf weed control chemicals in the spring and fall applications. Recommendations say that once you see the weeds start to turn yellow in about 10-12 days, make an additional application. Wild violet and ground ivy are two of the toughest weeds to control.

Good luck.
