What's the difference between the color violet and the color purple?

Theoretically, "purple" is a mixture of blue and red wavelengths, whereas "violet" reflects only the violet wavelengths of the spectrum. In practice, the use of both terms in English is highly imprecise.

What's the difference between the color violet and the color purple?
It's generally accepted that violet is a light shade of purple... rather like pink is a light shade of red.
