Whats the difference between the colours violet and purple?

could you kindly suggest me sites where I can view these colours?

Whats the difference between the colours violet and purple?
look at the wikipedia site. they show and name a number of purple and violet colors.

Violet would be the color of wavelengths which are shorter than blue.

Purple in its strict sense is always a color mix of red and blue. It will excite the blue AND the red receptors in your retina. It is a non-spectral color. A rainbow does not contain purple, only violet.

But in general usage the distinction often isn't made, though violet shades should be more blue and purples more red.
Reply:Purple is much darker; similar to blue. Violet is closer to reds.
Reply:I think of violet as being a darker version of purple
