I have reacted CuSO4 aq with an unknown clear solution and it turned into a dark violet solution. What is it?

I also think it is an acid, just based on smell. I believe it is HCl or HNO3, but I cannot be sure. Anyone familiar with this reaction?

I bet it is ammonia, NH3 forms a deep blue copper complex. What is the pH (litmus test) of your clear solution?
