Is ultra violet light used for anything? What sort of things, and what is its function?

The sun gives off a lot of it, and it is what burns your skin. Black lights give off UV light. The UV light bounces off certain colors, exciting their electrons, causing them to glow in visible light. UV light is used in tanning salons to simulate the UV light from the sun in order to give you a tan. Astronomers can take pictures of things in UV to see astronomical objects different then they would appear in visible light. UV light can be used to give better magnification in microscopes since it has shorter wavelengths then visible light. UV light can induce changes in some chemicals, so dentists use it to harden sealant on your teeth. UV light can also be used to stearlize things.

I am sure there are many more applications still. Here's a list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraviolet...
