Is tanning is caused by untra violet light?

do we get our tan from the untra violet light? I heard that it is the UV rays that give us the sunburn, so can a person get a tan without UV rays???

Is tanning is caused by untra violet light?
Yes, ultraviolet light causes tanning. Exposure to UV light causes the body to produce excess melanin, the molecule that makes skin darker. The reason the body does this is to protect you from excess UV light. UV light can cause skin cancer and mole formation, as well as general skin aging. It also causes sunburns.

Artificial tanning products can give you a tanned appearance without exposure to UV light. See the second link in my sources for more information about these products. I've heard that these can produce artificial-looking tans, so your best bet for a good tan is probably to slowly expose yourself to more and more sunlight to get your tan, or to use sunblock (and slowly decrease the SPF).
Reply:lt is the UV rays
Reply:Yes UV rays causes tanning but it is extremely dangerous due to the fact that it can cause ionization within your cells, which in turn causes skin cancer.
Reply:This is more a biology question but yes, UV light stimulates tanning. There exist cells in the skin called melanocytes whose reaction to ultraviolet light is to increase production of the skin pigment melanin. Melanin is brown. Natural skin colour is essentially a function of how much melanin you produce, with people from Equatorial Africa, for example, generally producing a lot more than poeple from Norway. Melanin is prophylactic against the deleterious effects of UV radiation such as skin cancer, but can lead to Vitamin D deficiencies in dark-skinned perons at higher latitudes/lower levels of insolation.

There are so-called sunless tanning products, which use a compound called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA reacts with surface skin cells to brown them in a manner similar to toasting a piece of bread (the Maillard reaction).

But real tanning needs UV.
