Why are the colors Red and Violet adjacent on the color wheel, but separated by other colors on the spectrum?

Colors on the spectrum are dictated by differing frequencies of visible light. Colors on the color wheel are most likely organized simply by how they -appear- aesthetically. Red light exists in the lower range of visible light frequencies, while violet light exists in the upper range, despite the fact that they both -appear- to be very similar.
