Well the soil should already be like permanant.african violets like "moist feet" but not soaked...They will rot if over watered so dont keep the soil too wet..just where when you stick your finger into the soil about 1 inch..if it feels moist still..not wet as mentioned..just moist..do not water it then..untill it feels almost dry..but not real dry..

Once planted in a potting mix, adding more mix isn't necessary so long as the mix level is correct. Water African Violets from the bottom only. I let them get slightly dry between waterings. Do not keep them soggy or they will rot. A good rule of thumb is water all "fuzzy-leaved" plants from the bottom.
